Introducing rams to a group of ewes that have been kept apart from the rams for a period of time results in the induction of heat about one estrous cycle interval later. This "ram effect" has been used to induce synchronized breeding activity in sheep flocks during the non-seasonal periods. The ram effect is also used to advance the breeding season. As no physical or visual contact between rams and ewes is needed, this effect has been suggested to be mediated by pheromones. 2, record 2, English, - ram%20effect

Outlast was developed for NASA and is consistently used in maier sports jackets as the material with automatic air-conditioning. Millions of microscopic PCM (phase change material) capsules store warmth during body activity and distribute them in the rest period. They thus ensure reliable temperature management and prevent large temperature fluctuations in the clothing, even when activity levels or the outside temperature vary. 4, record 10, English, - phase%2Dchange%20microcapsule
Record number: 10, Textual support number: 1 OBS
When the encapsulated PCM [phase change material] is heated to the melting point, it absorbs heat energy as it goes from a solid state to a liquid state. This phase change produces a temporary cooling effect in the clothing layers... The heat energy may come from the body(e. g. when the wearer first dons the garment) or from a warm environment. Once the PCM has completely melted, the storage of heat stops. If the PCM garment is worn in a cold environment where the temperature is below the PCM's freezing point, and the fabric temperature drops below this transition temperature, the micro-encapsulated liquid PCM will change back to a solid state, generating heat energy and a temporary warming effect... The developers claim that this heat exchange produces a buffering effect in clothing, minimizing changes in skin temperature and prolonging the thermal comfort of the wearer. 5, record 10, English, - phase%2Dchange%20microcapsule

The more evident and more serious blisters are structural blisters. They occur in many forms of deformation and are not confined to the exposed surface. They are caused mainly by the expansion of trapped air and water-vapour or moisture or other gases. Air and moisture trapped within the construction tend to expand during a rise in air temperature or from the heat of the sun, and this expansion causes the plies of the roofing to separate and bulge the roof surface in a balloon effect. The blisters are spongy to the touch, and may occur between any of the layers of roofing felt, or between membrane and deck, or membrane and insulation. 3, record 16, English, - air%20pocket

2, record 16, French, - poche%20d%27air

Earth has a natural greenhouse effect due to the presence of CO2, and water vapor. If Earth's atmosphere did not contain these gases, its temperature would be 33°C lower. The absorption of escaping infrared rays by the glass of a greenhouse contributes only a very small percentage to the retention of heat within the structure. A greenhouse retains heat mostly because its warmer air cannot rise and escape. Greenhouses with polyethylene walls work as well as those with glass walls, and polyethylene absorbs much less infrared energy than glass. Although the analogy is poorly chosen, the term "greenhouse effect, "as used in atmospheric science, continues to designate an insulating effect, regardless of the mechanism. 3, record 20, English, - greenhouse%20effect

Thermoacoustics is the study of the thermoacoustic effect and the attempt to harness the effect as a useful heat engine. A thermoacoustic refrigerator uses the thermoacoustic effect to move heat with sound. … Thermoacoustic refrigerators … use inert gasses which are both readily available, inexhaustible, and completely environmentally benign! And, because they can utilize waste heat as an energy source, they are extremely environmentally friendly. In addition, since thermoacoustic refrigerators do not use the compressors, lubricants, sliding seals, and other gizmos present in vapor compression refrigerators, the thermoacoustic refrigerator should be more reliable. In fact, a heat driven refrigerator does not need any moving parts in the refrigeration cycle! Finally, since thermoacoustic systems tend to work at higher frequencies and at single frequencies, noise and vibration control is actually easier than for a conventional refrigerator-so thermoacoustic refrigerators should be even quieter than the refrigerators of today. 1, record 27, English, - thermoacoustic%20refrigerator

The ’flip-side’ of the Peltier effect is the Seebeck effect-when thermal energy moves through an electrically-conductive material, charge carriers are transported by the heat. Thus when you create a temperature difference across a thermoelectric device, the movement of heat and charge carriers creates an electrical pressure(called Seebeck voltage). If an electrical load is connected across the device, current will flow-if not, the pressure builds to a steady state condition and a ’no-load’ voltage will be present. 3, record 34, English, - Seebeck%20voltage

Shock/shock interaction flow field is mumerically simulated to calculate nonequilibrium heat flux distributions along a circular cylinder surface. In this simulation, the location at which a shock impinges the bow shock of a circular cylinder was varied to examine the effect of flow pattern on the heat flux at the body surface.... The results show that some types of interaction pattern with a supersonic jet can also be formed in nonequilibrium flow, and that the flowfield is crucially dependent on the impinging location of an incident oblique shock. Heat flux is calculated by changing impinging location of shock wave, because flow pattern is sensitive to those locations. 2, record 35, English, - shock%2Dshock%20interaction

The Peltier Junction or Thermoelectric heat pump (TE) is a device that is cold on one side and hot on the other. This results from the passage of a DC current through semiconductor junctions assembled between and bonded to two ceramic plates. Heat is "pumped" from the cold side to the hot side. The which side is cold and which is hot is determined by the direction of current flow. In it’s basic form the system consists of four parts. A hot side exchanger, a cold side exchanger, the TE device and a power source. 2, record 46, English, - thermoelectric%20heat%20pump

By a stack effect, i. e. by natural draft, the cooling tower shell provides air circulation. When, as is the case with the wet cooling towers at EDF thermal and nuclear plants, the air and water are placed in direct contact in the heat exchange vessel, the hot air escaping from the shell is saturated with steam : mixing with the colder outside air produces by steam condensation a plume whose structure is similar to a natural cloud. 1, record 54, English, - wet%20cooling%20tower

Optoacoustic detector. Light which is absorbed by a molecule is generally reradiated from the molecule in the form of heat. If a laser, at an absorbing wavelength of a gas of interest, is passed through a closed cell, the temperature of the entire gas in the cell will rise and thus the pressure of the gas in the cell will rise. If the laser is turned on and off at a frequency of 100-20000 Hz, the resulting pressure rises and drops can be picked up as a signal by sensitive microphones. This somewhat odd combination of optics and acoustics turns out to have several advantages over systems which measure the absorption directly. The absorption will be quite small and thus the change in intensity of the laser beam is nearly impossible to detect. Because pressure in the cell rises more quickly for small length cells, this effect exactly cancels out gains in overall absorption by making the cell longer. Thus, a small optoacoustic cell will accomplish the same as a larger cell making its size a great asset.... The device is being tested as a sniffer for bomb vapours and for ambient air analyses. 1, record 67, English, - optoacoustic%20detector
