The set point theory [is] arguably the most influential and debated theory of body weight control. It suggests that like temperature in a room controlled by a thermostat, body weight(or body fat) is controlled by an equivalent device(ponderostat, adipostat) residing in the hypothalamus. Borrowing from the engineering vocabulary, this device receives feedback input from the controlled parameter(room temperature, body weight or body fat), and generates an error signal in a comparator if this feedback signal is deviating from a preset reference value(set point). The error signal is used to turn up or down any mechanisms that determine the level of the controlled parameter(heat production or dissipation in the case of room temperature, metabolizable energy-in or energy lost in the case of body weight/adiposity). 4, record 2, English, - ponderostat

Psychological thermogenesis : The psychological state may influence energy expenditure, as anxiety(or emotional state), anticipation, and acute stress stimulate adrenaline secretion, leading to increased heat production. For example, the energy cost of sitting at ease and sitting playing chess may differ by as much as two-fold—a difference that cannot entirely be attributed to muscular movement. Furthermore, the increase in energy expenditure when pilots are under air traffic control(or take off) is inversely related to their level of experience. 2, record 5, English, - psychological%20thermogenesis

Thermo-osmotic energy conversion(TOEC) is an emerging process that efficiently extracts energy from low-grade heat sources. By utilizing a temperature gradient, TOEC induces a partial vapor pressure difference across a hydrophobic membrane. This pressure gradient drives the vapor from the hot feed side through the membrane's pores to the cold permeate side. The movement of water from the hot feed side to the permeate side of the membrane results in excess fluid in the cold reservoir, generating a pressurized flow that can be harnessed to drive a turbine and generate electricity. 1, record 9, English, - thermo%2Dosmotic%20energy%20conversion

1, record 10, French, - fen%C3%AAtre%20thermique

The ocean and the atmosphere form a complex coupled system, exchanging gases, water (and water vapour), particles, momentum, and energy at the air-sea interface. These exchanges affect the biological, chemical, and physical processes of the ocean and influence the water cycle, weather, and climate. The ocean affects Earth’s climate through the long-term consequences of these exchanges. For example, the ocean is a gigantic reservoir for CO2 [carbon dioxide], which plays a critical role in shaping climate change. Self-sintering … was a process … to isolate and immobilize nuclear waste. The goal was to convert the waste to a glass that was resistant to leaching by water. The concept was to let the energy released by the radioactive decay of the waste heat … enough to drive off the water and eventually produce a solid, sintered glass product. … This technology was not advanced... 1, record 25, English, - self%2Dsintering

Solar heating is heat created by the energy of the sun. Solar heat can be either active or passive. Passive solar heating, as the name suggests, takes advantage of the heat created through natural means(heat created when sunlight passes through a window and becomes trapped inside a building). Active solar heating systems are made up of three components : the solar collector, energy storage, and distribution pipes or ducts. Sunlight is collected by absorber panels, conditioned if required, and distributed through the building by a heat transfer fluid or by air. 2, record 33, English, - solar%20heating

Outlast was developed for NASA and is consistently used in maier sports jackets as the material with automatic air-conditioning. When the encapsulated PCM [phase change material] is heated to the melting point, it absorbs heat energy as it goes from a solid state to a liquid state. This phase change produces a temporary cooling effect in the clothing layers... The heat energy may come from the body(e. g. when the wearer first dons the garment) or from a warm environment. Once the PCM has completely melted, the storage of heat stops. If the PCM garment is worn in a cold environment where the temperature is below the PCM's freezing point, and the fabric temperature drops below this transition temperature, the micro-encapsulated liquid PCM will change back to a solid state, generating heat energy and a temporary warming effect... The developers claim that this heat exchange produces a buffering effect in clothing, minimizing changes in skin temperature and prolonging the thermal comfort of the wearer. 5, record 36, English, - phase%2Dchange%20microcapsule

StratSat provides a geo-stationary platform at 20 km altitude capable of remaining on-station for up to five years. Payloads include high speed Internet services, direct broadcast TV, mobile telecommunication, etc. The envelope operates as a super-pressure hull(i. e. with no ballonet pressure control system). The hull will be of laminated fabric construction with Tedlar/Teflon, helium/weather barrier developed from AT-10/04. Multiple catenary curtain system supporting a payload module enclosed completely by the envelope. [The] payload module... comprises a single structural module with an externally mounted payload/mission system. The payload module provides a home for all of the airship's primary systems except for the propulsion system. The systems are close packed within the highly insulated module ensuring efficient heat and energy management. The payload module is pendulum stabilised within the envelope. The solar array provides the sole source of renewable energy for the airship. The array is placed over the upper quarter of the hull and extends over approximately three-quarters of the length of the craft. The array can be realigned to the daily sun location/angle by the roll rotation of the whole airship. The energy collected by the solar array is stored for use during the night in the series of batteries. Located in the stored for use during the night in a series of batteries. Located in the payload module, the batteries run the propulsion system, airship services and provide power to the mission system for up to 14 hours(during winter). The airship is propelled and steered by means of a ’Contra-Rotating Coned Rotor’ mounted on a tailcone at the rear of the envelope, as a part of a compound propulsion system. The unit provides longitudinal thrust(to counter the prevailing stratospheric winds) and lateral force(for manoeuvering) to enable the airship to hold station within a 1 km cube. The airship will be equipped with a multi-channel Flight Control Sy 7, record 68, English, - StratSat%C2%AE

3, record 81, French, - mat%C3%A9riau%20%C3%A0%20changement%20de%20phase%20solide%20liquide

In a nuclear electric propulsion system, heat from a nuclear reactor is converted to electrical energy either by direct thermoelectric or thermionic conversion. NEP provides higher power, thrust, and specific impulse than a SEP [solar electric propulsion] system, although the thrust still pales to insignificance compared to our chemical rockets. For a comparison specific impulse of chemical rockets is about 400secs, Deep Space 1 uses SEP and produces around 3300secs, NEP on the other hand could produce specific impulse as high as 13, 000secs. 1, record 85, English, - nuclear%20electric%20propulsion

Moisture in the atmosphere plays a greater role in weather and climate than any of the other constituents of the air. It is so significant that it is commonly considered separately from the remainder of the air by meteorologists. Most energy sources on Earth are forms of indirect solar energy, although we usually don’t think of them in that way. Coal, oil and natural gas derive from ancient biological material which took its energy from the sun (via plant photosynthesis) millions of years ago. All the energy in wood and foodstuffs also comes from the sun. Movement of the wind (which causes waves at sea), and the evaporation of water to form rainfall which accumulates in rivers and lakes, are also powered by the sun. Therefore, hydroelectric power and wind and wave power are forms of indirect solar energy. Direct solar energy is what we usually mean when we speak of solar power - it is the use of sunlight for heating or generating electricity. 2, record 95, English, - solar%20energy

It has been well established in pure and applied chemistry of simple molecules that reaction energies at room temperature can be understood in terms of two contributions, one related to energy differences at 0 K [Kelvin](the innate inherent chemical bond energy) and the other associated with integrals of heat capacity data over a range of temperatures(the thermal agitation energy). The necessity of a comparable separation of energy terms for biological reactions, however, has not been obvious to most workers in structural and molecular biology. 1, record 97, English, - thermal%20agitation%20energy

The amount of energy it takes to convert 2000 lbs. of water at 32° F. to ice at 32° F. during a 24 hour period. Calculation : 2000 lbs. H2O x 144 Btu/lb.=288, 000 Btu's in 24 Hrs. Divide by 24 hrs=12, 000 Btu/hr. Therefore a "ton" of cooling is a measure of heat energy which is roughly equivalent to 12, 000 BTU's. 5, record 98, English, - ton%20of%20refrigeration
