The absorption of escaping infrared rays by the glass of a greenhouse contributes only a very small percentage to the retention of heat within the structure. A greenhouse retains heat mostly because its warmer air cannot rise and escape. Greenhouses with polyethylene walls work as well as those with glass walls, and polyethylene absorbs much less infrared energy than glass. Although the analogy is poorly chosen, the term "greenhouse effect, "as used in atmospheric science, continues to designate an insulating effect, regardless of the mechanism. 3, record 4, English, - greenhouse%20effect

The radiation balance of the Earth system is an accounting of the incoming and outgoing components of radiation. These components are balanced over long time periods and over the Earth as whole, if they weren’t the Earth would be continually cooling or warming. However, over a short period of time, radiant energy is unequally distributed over the Earth. A portion of the sunlight that reaches Earth is absorbed into the system, while some of the light is reflected by our planet back into space. Some of the sunlight that gets absorbed is converted to heat and later emitted by the surface and atmosphere back up into space. The term "net radiation" refers to the total amount of sunlight and heat energy that does not escape from the top of the Earth's atmosphere back into space. More precisely, net radiation is the sum total of shortwave and longwave electromagnetic energy, at wavelengths ranging from 0. 3 to 100 micrometers, that remains in the Earth system. 11, record 8, English, - radiation%20balance

A pneumatic rate-of-rise spot detector consists of a small dome-shaped air chamber with a flexible metal diaphragm in the base. A small metering hole allows air to enter and exit the chamber during normal rise and fall of atmospheric temperature and barometric pressure. In the heat of a fire, however, the air within the chamber expands faster than it can escape through the metering hole. This expansion causes the pressure within the chamber to increase, forcing the metal diaphragm against contact points in the alarm circuit. An alarm signal to the system control unit results. This type of detector is most often combined in one unit that also has fixed-temperature capability. 1, record 9, English, - pneumatic%20rate%2Dof%2Drise%20spot%20detector

1, record 9, French, - d%C3%A9tecteur%20ponctuel%20thermov%C3%A9locim%C3%A9trique%20pneumatique

... hosts have been designed that are hollow spheres with eight pendant alkyl groups for solubilization purposes. They are formed by shell-closing, bowl-shaped compounds. The shell closures only occur when run in a solvent small enough to be imprisoned(a vacuum cannot be imprisoned). In carceplex 1, which exemplifies the idea,(CH3) 2NCOCH3 is imprisoned. Other carceplexes(such as 3, synthesized from 2) are being studied that have holes in their shells large enough to allow imprisoned molecules to escape and other molecules to enter. Molecules as large as anthracene have been "wedged" into 3 with heat. The chemistry of imprisoned molecules differs somewhat from that of molecules in solution. Another use of carcerands is to act as shields to protect unstable molecules from reacting with themselves. 3, record 10, English, - carcerand

Inspired by the model of evolutionary biological systems, the Cram research group is engaged in investigating host-guest complexation chemistry. Host multiheteromacrocycles with convergent binding sites embedded in concave surfaces converge on the binding sites of complementary guest compounds with divergent binding sites composing or attached to convex surfaces. ... Highly preorganized hosts (spherands, cavitands, and carcerands) are designed and synthesized. 4, record 10, English, - carcerand

Why Floor Insulation Works. Heat doesn’t rise. The myth that heat rises was used for many years to justify not insulating floors at all. That led to some very cold feet. It's hot air that rises. An air mass that is warmer than the air around it will rise in relation to that cooler air. The process of hot air rising is called convection. It's only one way that heat can escape a building. Two others are conduction and radiation. Floor insulation limits all three modes of heat loss. A warmer floor reduces the temperature difference that drives convection. Floor insulation also directly impedes conduction and radiation to the colder air below the floor. 1, record 11, English, - floor%20insulation

2, record 11, French, - isolation%20du%20plancher

It is possible to produce uniforms with such protection specifically for wear in high temperature regions, but by their very nature protective suits are hot and uncomfortable for prolonged periods of wear due to the absorbent layers of activated charcoal granules or fibres that they incorporate. These granules and fibres act as a barrier to the escape of body heat which could, in extremes, lead to physical collapse due to heat exhaustion. 2, record 12, French, - unit%C3%A9%20de%20stabilisation%20de%20la%20temp%C3%A9rature%20interne
