A binary-cycle geothermal plant employs a closed-loop heat exchange system in which the heat of geothermal fluid(primary fluid) is transferred to a lower-boiling heat transfer fluid(secondary fluid) that is thereby vaporized and used to drive a turbine or generator set. In other words, a binary cycle uses a secondary heat transfer fluid instead of steam in the power generation equipment. 4, record 1, English, - binary%20cycle%20geothermal%20power%20plant

Cycle choices for geothermal CHP plant. Combined heat and power plants can start with either geothermal steam plants or organic Rankine cycles at the high-temperature end. In the first case, the steam plant is designed primarily for power generation and the direct heat application is added after some years of proven operation. In the second case, the plant is usually designed as a CHP plant from the beginning, although a power unit may be added to a long-standing direct heat plant to make fuller use of the resource. 4, record 2, English, - geothermal%20combined%20heat%20and%20power%20plant

1, record 9, French, - refroidissement%20par%20noyage

On forcing a cell suspension at high pressure through a narrow orifice, the rapid pressure drop provides a very powerful means of disrupting the cells. In practice it is simple to design equipment to subject the cell suspension to shear forces before releasing the pressure. By changing the pressure applied, cells may be disrupted completely or only sufficiently to release periplasmic enzymes.... [Experimentors have] used a liquid shear system for the disruption of chloroplasts. The suspension was passed through a needle valve at pressures up to 20,000 p.s.i. and a flow rate of 10 ml/min. Under these conditions, rupture of E. coli was indicated by an increase in glutamic acid decarboxylase activity. 2, record 16, English, - liquid%20shear
Record number: 16, Textual support number: 1 OBS
In practical terms liquid shear is associated with the generation of heat. As a result subsequent increases in the temperature of the suspension of up to 40 °C may be encountered. Cell suspensions must, therefore, be introduced to the apparatus at 0-4°C to minimise loss of enzyme activity. If recycling is used then cooling before re-entry is essential. Equally, with this type of equipment the best results are obtained by using a homogeneous cell suspension. Irregular particle sizes owing to filamentous or pelleted growth modes reduce the efficiency of cell breakage. 3, record 16, English, - liquid%20shear

The MHD(magnetohydrodynamic) generator... transforms thermal energy or kinetic energy directly into electricity. MHD generators are different from traditional electric generators in that they can operate at high temperatures without moving parts. MHD was eagerly developed because the exhaust of a plasma MHD generator is a flame, still able to heat the boilers of a steam power plant. So high-temperature MHD was developed as a topping cycle to increase the efficiency of electric generation, especially when burning coal or natural gas. It has also been applied to pump liquid metals and for quiet submarine engines. 1, record 17, English, - magnetohydrodynamic%20generator

Leaks... fall into two basic types : internal leakage [such] as a thin oil film is built into the working parts of a hydraulic system. This lubricates the mating surfaces of valve spools, cylinder pistons, and other moving parts. Oil is not lost through this normal internal leakage since it eventually returns to the system reservoir. However, too much internal leakage will slow the operation of the system and waste power through the generation of heat. In some cases, it may cause cylinders to creep or drift. Or it may cause loss of oil control in the valves.... External oil leaks not only look bad-they can be expensive and hazardous.... A small leak can also be the signal for a hydraulic rupture that may injure a person while putting the machine out of operation.... Every joint in a hydraulic circuit is a potential point of leakage. This is why the number of connections in a system is kept at a minimum. Components can leak, but care in assembly and use of new seals and gaskets during overhaul will help to reduce this problem. 2, record 18, English, - leak

The Starboard 0(S0) truss segment is the first major element of the International Space Station's enormous exterior framework. The S0 Truss is 13. 4 meters(44 feet) long and 4. 6 meters(15 feet) wide and weighs 12, 247 kilograms(27, 000 pounds). It is the center segment of 11 integrated trusses that will provide the foundation for station subsystem hardware installation, utility distribution, power generation, heat rejection and external payload accommodations. The S0 truss acts as the junction from which external utilities are routed to the pressurized modules by means of EVA-deployed umbilicals. The S0 truss is going to the space station with a complement of pre-integrated hardware to increase ISS functionality, including the Mobile Transporter, the Trailing Umbilical System, the Portable Work Platform, four Global Positioning System antennas, two rate gyros, an Extravehicular Charged Particle Detection System and umbilicals for U. Atlantis (STS-110, mission 8A) rejoignait l'ISS [International Space Station] pour doter la Station d'une nouvelle structure : l'Integrated Truss Structure SO (le segment central de la poutre de 91 m à terme).

In respect of a boiler, "heat output" relates to the energy value of the useful hot water or steam produced. In considering electricity generation, however, the overall thermal efficiency is the total energy value of the electricity "sent out", expressed as a percentage of the energy value(gross as fired) of the fuel used. This overall concept takes account of both boiler and steam turbine losses. A modern power station achieves about 35 per cent thermal efficiency. 4, record 36, English, - thermal%20efficiency
