The wet-bulb globe temperature(WBGT) index was originally developed based on the weighting of three environmental parameters : dry-bulb temperature, wet-bulb temperature and black globe temperature. A shielded dry-bulb thermometer, a natural wet-bulb thermometer and a globe thermometer(a black globe heated by solar radiation) are used to capture these environmental parameters. The WBGT index was later standardized... and is now widely used as a heat stress index throughout the world, with the guidelines and permissible threshold limits in many industries, including construction and underground mining operations, being based on this measure.

Index used to determine the relative discomfort resulting from a specific combination of wind speed and air temperature, expressed by the loss of body heat in watts per square metre(of skin).

The windchill factor is the temperature that a person feels because of the wind. For example, if a thermometer reads 35 degrees Fahrenheit outside and the wind is blowing at 25 miles per hour (mph), the windchill factor causes it to feel like it is 8 degrees F. In other words, your 98-degree body loses heat as though it is 8 degrees outside.

Par exemple, si la température extérieure est de -10 °C et que le refroidissement éolien est de -20 °C, cela signifie que vous ressentirez sur votre visage le même froid que si vous étiez dehors à -20 °C par temps calme. Plus le vent est important plus cette indice diminue.

Index intended to compare the climates of different locations in Canada based on four factors of discomfort, psychological effect, hazard and outdoor mobility. The higher the number, the more severe the climate is in that area. The lower the score, the more ideal the climate.

Ten years ago the federal government asked David Phillips, senior climatologist at Environment Canada, to come up with a reliable comparison of weather extremes across the country. He took into account such factors as extreme cold, the frequency of blowing snow and freezing rain, as well as hours of daylight. He also looked at warm weather nasties such as extreme heat, humidity and thunderstorms. The result of all this work was the Climate Severity Index.

A sophisticated drag racing weather station will allow you to store data on as many as 256 previous runs and performs an analysis to give you a prediction based on the weather conditions instantly. It can keep and use separate databases for separate vehicles, tracks, or classes. Some of the really sophisticated stations have a prediction deviation function [which] gives a reliability value of the prediction. It gives you a margin of error based on the information in the database that you chose. Within the last few years, windmeters have been added to the weather station box of tricks.

The Kestrel line of wind meters or anemometers... in less than 60 seconds, provide the answer to the major spraying season question that haunts producers each morning :"How windy is it?" The Kestrel 1000... gives a fast answer to wind speed average and gusts.... the model 2000 will add temperature and for those really cold days on the sprayer, add wind chill to that list. The 3000 adds humidity, dew point and heat stress index.... But for an all out weather station you can hold in the palm of your hand, the Kestrel 4000 provides all of this, in addition to wet bulb, altitude, air density and barometric pressure. Most importantly, 250 of these readings can be recorded in the device's memory and later transferred to the farm computer.... Michael Naughton of Nielsen Keller-man said the company released the 1000 in 1999 with the intention of it being a tool for sailors and outdoor sports and weather enthusiasts. "Farmers are turning out to be a really big part of our business. The 4000 is really popular with them. We were surprised by the demand for little hand-held weather stations, "he said.

Laser Scintillometers. The fluctuations in atmospheric index of refraction is related to the temperature structure of the air. These index fluctuations cause deflections of light(for example, mirages) and these fluctuations can be examined by laser light travelling over a horizontal path. The resulting intensity of fluctuations can be analysed for a heat flux which could cause those index variations. A difficulty with the system is the fluctuations caused by mechanical turbulence such as wind may interfere with the thermal measurement. The system is inexpensive and may prove quite reliable.
