A plancha is a common flat-top griddle used in Spanish cooking that combines high-temperature searing with a small amount of smoking.... Like the griddles used in fast food joints to sear hamburger patties, the plancha is heated to a scorching temperature of around 350 °C(or 662 °F). Unlike a griddle, the highest heat is concentrated at the center of the metal plate, allowing for different ingredients to be shifted easily without adjusting the intensity of the heat source, while being cooked simultaneously. 3, record 1, English, - plancha

Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The test equipment consists of a horizontal tunnel 7. 6 m long, 450 mm wide, and 300 mm deep... The roof is removable and lined with a low density material of mineral composition. The walls and floor are constructed of refractory fire brick. One wall has observation windows along its length. Flames from two burners at one end are forced down the tunnel by a steady draught of air at 1. 2 m/s. These burner flames are about 1. 37 m long, release heat at a steady rate of about 90 kW, and impinge directly on the test specimen, which is mounted either on the floor or on the ceiling of the tunnel. This exposure is similar in intensity to what occurs when a small piece of furniture leaning against a wall is set on fire. The tunnel is calibrated by adjusting the rate of heat release of the burners so that it takes about five and a half minutes for flames to reach the exhaust end of the tunnel when the specimen is 18 mm select-grade red oak. In the exhaust duct at the end of the tunnel are a light source and detector for measuring smoke and a thermocouple for determining heat released. 3, record 7, English, - tunnel%20test

1, record 7, French, - essai%20en%20tunnel

The radiation balance of the Earth system is an accounting of the incoming and outgoing components of radiation. These components are balanced over long time periods and over the Earth as whole, if they weren’t the Earth would be continually cooling or warming. A portion of the sunlight that reaches Earth is absorbed into the system, while some of the light is reflected by our planet back into space. Some of the sunlight that gets absorbed is converted to heat and later emitted by the surface and atmosphere back up into space. The term "net radiation" refers to the total amount of sunlight and heat energy that does not escape from the top of the Earth’s atmosphere back into space. More precisely, net radiation is the sum total of shortwave and longwave electromagnetic energy, at wavelengths ranging from 0.3 to 100 micrometers, that remains in the Earth system. 11, record 8, English, - radiation%20balance

The blow pipe was the first burner to produce a blue flame and, therefore, any great heat intensity. The blue flame was produced by blowing primary air into the base of the flame. The modern blow pipe accomplishes this same thing by blowing compressed air in the same end that the gas enters. The gas and air is thus mixed in the pipe as in the burners in modern day furnaces. 1, record 12, English, - blow%20pipe

Optoacoustic detector. Light which is absorbed by a molecule is generally reradiated from the molecule in the form of heat. If a laser, at an absorbing wavelength of a gas of interest, is passed through a closed cell, the temperature of the entire gas in the cell will rise and thus the pressure of the gas in the cell will rise. If the laser is turned on and off at a frequency of 100-20000 Hz, the resulting pressure rises and drops can be picked up as a signal by sensitive microphones. This somewhat odd combination of optics and acoustics turns out to have several advantages over systems which measure the absorption directly. The absorption will be quite small and thus the change in intensity of the laser beam is nearly impossible to detect. Because pressure in the cell rises more quickly for small length cells, this effect exactly cancels out gains in overall absorption by making the cell longer. Thus, a small optoacoustic cell will accomplish the same as a larger cell making its size a great asset.... The device is being tested as a sniffer for bomb vapours and for ambient air analyses. 1, record 14, English, - optoacoustic%20detector

Laser Scintillometers. The fluctuations in atmospheric index of refraction is related to the temperature structure of the air. These index fluctuations cause deflections of light(for example, mirages) and these fluctuations can be examined by laser light travelling over a horizontal path. The resulting intensity of fluctuations can be analysed for a heat flux which could cause those index variations. A difficulty with the system is the fluctuations caused by mechanical turbulence such as wind may interfere with the thermal measurement. The system is inexpensive and may prove quite reliable. 1, record 15, English, - laser%20scintillometer
