Matrix effects can be divided into two kinds, physical and chemical. Physical matrix effects depend on the physical properties of the sample and generally relate to the ablation step of LIBS [laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy]. That is, differences between the specific heat, latent heat of vaporization, thermal conductivity, absorption, etc., of different matrices can change the amount of an element ablated from one matrix compared with another matrix even though the properties of the ablation laser pulse remain constant. 2, record 1, English, - physical%20matrix%20effect

Laser lipolysis is a non-invasive form of body sculpting. It removes small fat deposits.... Laser lipolysis can be done in the doctor's office. It takes about half an hour, and you can return to normal activity right away. There is no anesthesia involved. To do the laser "lipo, "your doctor attaches paddle-like applicators to the area to be treated. The paddles emit heat that penetrates your skin and heats up the fat cells underneath. The heat damages the membranes of the fat cells, so they start to die off. Your body then absorbs the dead cells. 2, record 3, English, - laser%20lipolysis

During laser hair removal, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment(melanin) in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped sacs within the skin(hair follicles) that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth. Although laser hair removal effectively delays hair growth for long periods, it usually doesn’t result in permanent hair removal. 2, record 4, English, - laser%20hair%20removal

In a ruby laser, a rod of ruby is irradiated with the intense flash of light from xenon-filled flashtubes. Light in the green and blue regions of the spectrum is absorbed by chromium ions, raising the energy of electrons of the ions from the ground state level to one of the broad F bands of levels. Electrons in the F bands rapidly undergo non-radiative transitions to the two metastable E levels. A non-radiative transition does not result in the emission of light; the energy released in the transition is dissipated as heat in the ruby crystal. 2, record 14, English, - non%2Dradiative%20tansition

Optoacoustic detector. Light which is absorbed by a molecule is generally reradiated from the molecule in the form of heat. If a laser, at an absorbing wavelength of a gas of interest, is passed through a closed cell, the temperature of the entire gas in the cell will rise and thus the pressure of the gas in the cell will rise. If the laser is turned on and off at a frequency of 100-20000 Hz, the resulting pressure rises and drops can be picked up as a signal by sensitive microphones. This somewhat odd combination of optics and acoustics turns out to have several advantages over systems which measure the absorption directly. The absorption will be quite small and thus the change in intensity of the laser beam is nearly impossible to detect. Because pressure in the cell rises more quickly for small length cells, this effect exactly cancels out gains in overall absorption by making the cell longer. Thus, a small optoacoustic cell will accomplish the same as a larger cell making its size a great asset.... The device is being tested as a sniffer for bomb vapours and for ambient air analyses. 1, record 25, English, - optoacoustic%20detector

Laser Scintillometers. The fluctuations in atmospheric index of refraction is related to the temperature structure of the air. These index fluctuations cause deflections of light(for example, mirages) and these fluctuations can be examined by laser light travelling over a horizontal path. The resulting intensity of fluctuations can be analysed for a heat flux which could cause those index variations. A difficulty with the system is the fluctuations caused by mechanical turbulence such as wind may interfere with the thermal measurement. The system is inexpensive and may prove quite reliable. 1, record 26, English, - laser%20scintillometer
