Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Grapes begin their growth cycle in the spring when average daily temperature is about 10 °C(50 °F). To reach maturity, they require a certain amount of heat above 10 °C during the growing season. This amount of heat, called the heat summation, is calculated by totalling the number of degrees of average daily temperature over 10 °C for each day of the growing season. A heat summation of about 1, 800 is required for successful growth. If the heat summation is less than required, the grapes will not ripen; they will reach the end of the growing season with insufficient sugar and too much acidity.... Where the heat summation is much greater than required,... the grapes mature earlier and with less acidity and colour than those produced under cooler conditions. Factors influencing the heat summation of a vineyard and, therefore, grape composition include exposure... air drainage..., soil temperature(above 10 °C during the growing season), and soil moisture content... 3, record 3, English, - heat%20summation

The Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder instrument records bright sunshine.... The Meteorological Service of Canada began using this instrument in 1881. The radiant heat of the sun, concentrated by the spherical glass lens, burns a narrow track in a specially prepared card mounted below the lense in a portion of a spherical bowl. A low sun has feeble burning power so the number of possible hours of "bright sunshine" is less than the number of hours of "visible sunshine", the sunshine unit used in the United States 4, record 12, English, - bright%20sunshine

L'héliographe Campbell-Stokes enregistre l'insolation effective. [...] 2, record 12, French, - insolation%20effective

Leaks... fall into two basic types : internal leakage [such] as a thin oil film is built into the working parts of a hydraulic system. This lubricates the mating surfaces of valve spools, cylinder pistons, and other moving parts. Oil is not lost through this normal internal leakage since it eventually returns to the system reservoir. However, too much internal leakage will slow the operation of the system and waste power through the generation of heat. In some cases, it may cause cylinders to creep or drift. Or it may cause loss of oil control in the valves.... External oil leaks not only look bad-they can be expensive and hazardous.... A small leak can also be the signal for a hydraulic rupture that may injure a person while putting the machine out of operation.... Every joint in a hydraulic circuit is a potential point of leakage. This is why the number of connections in a system is kept at a minimum. Components can leak, but care in assembly and use of new seals and gaskets during overhaul will help to reduce this problem. 2, record 22, English, - leak

2, record 22, French, - fuite

Systems Analysis of a Future Semi-Reusable Launcher, Based on a High Thrust Bleed Cycle Rocket Engine. In this paper a high thrust, cryogenic bleed cycle engine, to be used for propulsion of future reusable booster stages(liquid fly back boosters), of an expendable heavy lift launcher, is analyzed. The system configuration remains unchanged, in terms of total available fuel and the number of engines, hereas the variation of the engine parameters result in a change of total system mass and payload capacity. Different arrangements of bleed cycles are being analyzed, and compared with each other. The paper describes a simplified heat transfer model, used in the analysis of the suggested cycles. The thrust chamber design is discussed and a preliminary design of the booster vehicle, including a trajectory analysis, is presented. 3, record 26, English, - semi%2Dreusable%20launcher

Other sources define "building shell" as "The skeleton of a building to which the finished exterior and interior are applied. It includes the building foundation", which refers to a completely different concept. We conclude that for a majority of authors the two terms may be used as synonyms and that for some others "building shell" refers to the skeleton (structure) rather than the envelope of the building. 12, record 30, English, - building%20envelope

Removal of metal by the energy of an electric spark that arcs between a tool and the surface of the workpiece. The tool and workpiece are immersed in a fluid such as oil that will not conduct electricity... Rapid pulses of electricity are delivered to the tool, causing sparks to jump from the tool to the workpiece. The heat from each spark melts away a small amount of metal. As the metal is removed, it is cooled and flushed away by the fluid being circulated through the spark gap... In most metallic [solar collector] systems, especially those using a number of metals or a reactive metal such as aluminum, the heat transfer fluid can have a significant impact on corrosion. In aqueous solutions, the concentration of dissolved chemicals, heavy metal ions, and pH of the fluid must be controlled. Deionized or demineralized water has been used successfully but additional steps are usually taken. There are a number of performance factors that determine how well your heating system is able to supply heat to your home. For all non-electric heating systems there are two basic approaches to defining efficient performance. Both measure the percentage of heat available in a fuel that is actually delivered as heat to the house. Steady state efficiency is a performance factor that is easily measured over a short period of time. It indicates the performance of a system that has been running long enough to allow all furnace components to reach their normal operating temperatures... Airtight construction. Any house has a large number of potential air leakage points... These leakage points let cold outside air in, and warm inside air out. As a result, in a conventional house, it is not uncommon for the heated indoor air to be completely changed every half hour. A major potential problem associated with this air change [is] condensation in the building's structure... There is in addition, a second problem : such air change typically accounts for 25-30 per cent of the total house heat loss... The use of an air-vapour barrier is an attempt to prevent these problems by stopping virtually all air leakage. 1, record 52, English, - airtight%20construction
