The large-break loss of coolant accident(LBLOCA) is a design basis accident(DBA) in CANDU [Canadian deuterium uranium] reactors that is postulated to occur as a result of an instantaneous failure of a large diameter pipe in the heat transport system. Due to the positive coolant void reactivity characteristic of CANDU reactors, LBLOCA is characterized by a power excursion... LBLOCA involves simultaneous degradation of cooling capability and fast positive reactivity insertion, due to rapid core voiding. 6, record 1, English, - large%2Dbreak%20loss%2Dof%2Dcoolant%20accident

Measurement of Heat of Combustion. In boiler practice, the heat of combustion of a fuel is the amount of heat, expressed in Btu, generated by the complete combustion (or oxidation) of a unit weight (1 pound in the United States) of fuel. Calorific value or "fuel Btu value" are other terms used ... For accurate heat values of solid and liquid fuels calorimeter determinations are required. However, approximate heat values may be determined for most coals if the ultimate chemical analysis is known. 2, record 33, English, - heat%20of%20combustion

StratSat provides a geo-stationary platform at 20 km altitude capable of remaining on-station for up to five years. Payloads include high speed Internet services, direct broadcast TV, mobile telecommunication, etc. The envelope operates as a super-pressure hull(i. e. with no ballonet pressure control system). The hull will be of laminated fabric construction with Tedlar/Teflon, helium/weather barrier developed from AT-10/04. Multiple catenary curtain system supporting a payload module enclosed completely by the envelope. [The] payload module... comprises a single structural module with an externally mounted payload/mission system. The payload module provides a home for all of the airship's primary systems except for the propulsion system. The systems are close packed within the highly insulated module ensuring efficient heat and energy management. The payload module is pendulum stabilised within the envelope. The solar array provides the sole source of renewable energy for the airship. The array is placed over the upper quarter of the hull and extends over approximately three-quarters of the length of the craft. The array can be realigned to the daily sun location/angle by the roll rotation of the whole airship. The energy collected by the solar array is stored for use during the night in the series of batteries. Located in the stored for use during the night in a series of batteries. Located in the payload module, the batteries run the propulsion system, airship services and provide power to the mission system for up to 14 hours(during winter). The airship is propelled and steered by means of a ’Contra-Rotating Coned Rotor’ mounted on a tailcone at the rear of the envelope, as a part of a compound propulsion system. The unit provides longitudinal thrust(to counter the prevailing stratospheric winds) and lateral force(for manoeuvering) to enable the airship to hold station within a 1 km cube. The airship will be equipped with a multi-channel Flight Control Sy 7, record 40, English, - StratSat%C2%AE

For a comparison specific impulse of chemical rockets is about 400secs, Deep Space 1 uses SEP and produces around 3300secs, NEP on the other hand could produce specific impulse as high as 13, 000secs. 1, record 45, English, - nuclear%20electric%20propulsion

1, record 50, French, - inactivation%20thermique

The Fire Radiative Power product(FRP, in megawatts) provides information on the measured radiant heat output of detected fires. It has been demonstrated in small-scale experimental fires that the amount of radiant heat energy liberated per unit time(the Fire Radiative Power) is related to the rate at which fuel is being consumed. This is a direct result of the combustion process, whereby carbon-based fuel is oxidised to CO2 with the release of a certain "heat yield. "Therefore, measuring this FRP and integrating it over the lifetime of the fire provides an estimate of the total Fire Radiative Energy(FRE), which for wildfires should be proportional to the total mass of fuel biomass combusted. 1, record 52, English, - fire%20radiative%20power

The MHD(magnetohydrodynamic) generator... transforms thermal energy or kinetic energy directly into electricity. MHD generators are different from traditional electric generators in that they can operate at high temperatures without moving parts. MHD was eagerly developed because the exhaust of a plasma MHD generator is a flame, still able to heat the boilers of a steam power plant. So high-temperature MHD was developed as a topping cycle to increase the efficiency of electric generation, especially when burning coal or natural gas. It has also been applied to pump liquid metals and for quiet submarine engines. 1, record 65, English, - magnetohydrodynamic%20generator

Leaks... fall into two basic types : internal leakage [such] as a thin oil film is built into the working parts of a hydraulic system. This lubricates the mating surfaces of valve spools, cylinder pistons, and other moving parts. Oil is not lost through this normal internal leakage since it eventually returns to the system reservoir. However, too much internal leakage will slow the operation of the system and waste power through the generation of heat. In some cases, it may cause cylinders to creep or drift. Or it may cause loss of oil control in the valves.... External oil leaks not only look bad-they can be expensive and hazardous.... A small leak can also be the signal for a hydraulic rupture that may injure a person while putting the machine out of operation.... Every joint in a hydraulic circuit is a potential point of leakage. This is why the number of connections in a system is kept at a minimum. Components can leak, but care in assembly and use of new seals and gaskets during overhaul will help to reduce this problem. 2, record 70, English, - leak

The MSG [Microgravity Science Glovebox] is a containment facility designed for supporting a wide range of microgravity science investigations and demonstrations. In the sealed mode, the MSG serves as a single level of containment by providing a physical barrier. In the air circulation mode the MSG serves as a one failure tolerant containment by providing a physical barrier and a negative pressure relative to the cabin. The MSG further facilitates investigations by providing many of the resources that are typically used by microgravity science investigations. 4, record 78, English, - microgravity%20science%20glovebox

Natural convection, also called thermosyphoning, does not produce high flow. It cannot remove full power heat, but is adequate to remove decay heat. Natural convection occurs when cool D2O in the boiler tubes falls by gravity into the core. It displaces the hot, less dense D2O surrounding the fuel. The boilers cool the fluid pushed into them from the fuel channels, and it becomes more dense. The liquid that falls into the core expands on heating and becomes less dense. Thermosyphoning continues as long as the boilers continue to remove heat. 1, record 82, English, - natural%20convection

1, record 82, French, - convexion%20naturelle

Solar Orbital Transfer Vehicle(SOTV) GA is a major subcontractor to Boeing on the SOTV, a space vehicle that can efficiently transport space payloads from Low Earth Orbits(LEO) to Geosynchronous Orbits(GEO) while providing kilowatts of electrical power. A solar concentrator heats a graphite receiver up to temperatures of 2400 K. Heat from the graphite receiver is used to heat thermionic converters, which produce efficient, reliable electrical power. Alternately, hydrogen can be passed through passages within the graphite receiver, expanded out a nozzle and used to produce highly efficient propulsion. The SOTV has the potential to double the delivered payload mass to GEO. 2, record 95, English, - solar%20orbital%20transfer%20vehicle

Compared to existing coal power plants, clean coal technology(CCT) plants have the potential to both increase the competitiveness and environmental acceptance of coal, through increased overall thermal efficiency and reduced emissions of GHG [greenhouse gas] and other air pollutants. Given the importance of coal-based energy to the global economy and the need to reduce emissions, nations throughout the world are accelerating the development of a host of CCTs including new chemical processes that extract energy from coal in the form of electricity, heat and synthesis gas(H2 and CO) with near zero pollutant emissions. 2, record 96, English, - clean%20coal%20technology

The new 524-megawatt power plant in Hindman, Kentucky, will use so-called clean coal technology, which generates significantly more pollution than natural gas-fired power plants and renewable energy sources, such as wind, biomass, solar and geothermal energy. The plant, which is expected to be in operation by 2004, will emit annually more than 1,000 pounds of mercury, a potent neurotoxin. By comparison, natural gas-fired plants and renewable energy sources emit no mercury. "The term ’clean coal’ is like saying ’safe cigarettes,’" said Hawkins. 2, record 96, French, - technologie%20du%20charbon%20%C3%A9pur%C3%A9
