There is an alternative between closed-and open-loop systems called standing column wells(SCWs). In a SCW, groundwater is pumped from the base of a deep well and directed to a heat exchanger.... A SCW consists of a long borehole mostly drilled in the bedrock and filled with groundwater... Typical installations use a PVC [polyvinyl chloride] pipe almost as long as the well within which a submersible pump is installed. In a conventional SCW, groundwater is pumped at the bottom of the well through a PVC pipe and returned below the dynamic level in the annular space of the borehole via a rejection pipe.... Before reinjecting the groundwater into the SCW, part of the flow rate can be diverted into a separate injection well. This process is called "bleed" and improves the system performance by attracting water from the undisturbed neighbouring ground through aquifer fractures. The bleed induces heat transfer by advection..., which improves significantly the thermal efficiency of the SCW.

The Microgravity Science Glovebox(MSG) is a joint development project between NASA and the European Space Agency(ESA). The double rack unit is a versatile research facility designed to permit the flexibility of crew-manipulated investigations. Its configuration has been planned around the concept of an experimental workstation where a variety of experiments can be installed and operated in a fashion very similar to their operation in a ground-based laboratory.... Specifically, the facility provides a large enclosed work volume, power, video, photography, vacuum connections, heat rejection, stowage, filtered air, gaseous nitrogen, lighting, airlock access, physical positioning and hold-down attachments, and computer data acquisition and control capabilities.

CONT

The MSG [Microgravity Science Glovebox] is a containment facility designed for supporting a wide range of microgravity science investigations and demonstrations. In the sealed mode, the MSG serves as a single level of containment by providing a physical barrier. In the air circulation mode the MSG serves as a one failure tolerant containment by providing a physical barrier and a negative pressure relative to the cabin. The MSG further facilitates investigations by providing many of the resources that are typically used by microgravity science investigations.

... the JEM-EF provides a total of l2 attachment ports called Exposed Facility Units (EFUs) to which space-exposed hardware may be mated using a standard Payload Interface Unit (PIU). ... A total of 10 EFUs are available for User payloads, the other two being allocated to the ELM-ES [Experiment Logistics Module - Exposed Section] which transports payloads to orbit and stores them when they are not active, and the Interorbit Communication System (ICS). Five of the 10 EFUs are available for NASA payloads.

CONT

The JEM-EF can provide the resources of power, communication and heat rejection capability to the payload via the EEU [Equipment Exchange Unit]. Radiative heat rejection(i. e., heat dissipation) is necessary for some Cassini spacecraft components, and this is accomplished by thermal louvers. The thermal louver assemblies provide thermostatically positioned, low-emissivity blades located over a high-emissivity radiative mounting surface. The blades are mounted in such a way as to minimize their thermal coupling to the mounting surface. When the blades are opened, the mounting surface is exposed to space, thereby providing heat rejection from that surface.

The Starboard 0(S0) truss segment is the first major element of the International Space Station's enormous exterior framework. The S0 Truss is 13. 4 meters(44 feet) long and 4. 6 meters(15 feet) wide and weighs 12, 247 kilograms(27, 000 pounds). It is the center segment of 11 integrated trusses that will provide the foundation for station subsystem hardware installation, utility distribution, power generation, heat rejection and external payload accommodations. The S0 truss acts as the junction from which external utilities are routed to the pressurized modules by means of EVA-deployed umbilicals. The S0 truss is going to the space station with a complement of pre-integrated hardware to increase ISS functionality, including the Mobile Transporter, the Trailing Umbilical System, the Portable Work Platform, four Global Positioning System antennas, two rate gyros, an Extravehicular Charged Particle Detection System and umbilicals for U. Atlantis (STS-110, mission 8A) rejoignait l'ISS [International Space Station] pour doter la Station d'une nouvelle structure : l'Integrated Truss Structure SO (le segment central de la poutre de 91 m à terme).
