A recent major defect report highlights the importance of following aircraft manufacturers’ instructions when carrying out maintenance. Maintenance personnel were required to carry out a check of a battery temperature sensor-a test that required the sensor to be chilled with a cooling agent and then heated by a heat source. The cooling agent nominated by the aircraft manufacturer was Freon TF.

Trips employing auxiliary trip units include the Loss of Load trip and the APD – High trip. The Loss of Load trip is a contact input from the Electro Hydraulic Control System control oil pressure on each of the four high pressure stop valves. … 10. Loss of Load. The Loss of Load(turbine stop valve(TSV) control oil pressure) trip is anticipatory for the loss of heat removal capabilities of the secondary system following a turbine trip. The Loss of Load trip prevents lifting the pressurizer saftey valves, PORVs and MSSVs in the event of a turbine generator trip. Thus, the trip minimizes the pressure and temperature transients on the reactor by initiating a trip well before reaching the Pressurizer Pressure – High trip and pressurizer safety valve setpoints. The four RPS Loss of Load reactor trip channels receive their input from sensors mounted on the high pressure TSV actuators. Since there are four high pressure TSVs, one actuator per valve and one sensor per actuator, each sensor sends its signal to a different RPS channel. When the turbine trips, control oil is dumped from the high pressure TSVs. When the control oil pressure drops to the appropriate setpoint, a reactor trip signal is generated.

Since the low cost sensor technologies available present several limitations to their inclusion in this system, it was developed and implemented a low cost sensor, as described by Valente et al.(1997), based on the heat-pulse and capacitance methods. In the first method the maximum temperature rise measured at some distance from a line heat source can be used to determine the volumetric heat capacity and hence the water content of a porous media, such as soil. The second method relates the volumetric water content with the capacitance change of a probe, inserted in the soil, according to its dielectric proprieties. Simultaneous use of both methods improves sensor accuracy, gives built-in fault detection capability, and makes possible self-calibration procedures.... In a capacitance-based method, the soil moisture can be obtained by measuring the capacitance that varies with the dielectric properties of materials.

The Vision Skin sensor is designed to do accurate range sensing and close range imaging in approximately the 1 cm distance range. It utilizes an array of collimated holes as individual parallel pin-hole cameras to perform close range lens-less imaging. When a laser diode is added to the system, triangulation is used to determine the distance of the surface. The sensor can switch between imaging mode and range mode simply with software and lighting mode.

OBS

... Vision Skin provides images and data of objects very close to the sensor surface. These are designed to bathe boatloads of wafers or other parts in quantity production. The bath vessels should be equipped with heating elements that surround and concentrate the desired heat on the liquid within the bath. This will enable the bath liquid to be heated rapidly(6 °C or more per minute), while also allowing the bath to be very stably operated between 40 ° and 180 °C. Baths should be equipped with a built-in thermistor sensor to regulate the amount of heat, and provide the capability of maintaining a very constant-temperature when necessary. The vessel should be designed to resist thermal shock, be capable of high heat retention, and be impervious to most acids. Wafer baths can be either mounted to the work surface, or they can be used free-standing unit. Vessel size should allow the bat to accept any standard wafer within a wafer carrier.

An interesting development has been the report of a so-called enzyme thermistor. The sensor, a thermistor, is in direct contact with the site of reaction through its placement in a micro-column of immobilised enzyme. Passage of substrate solution over the thermistor tip can result in as much as one-half of the total heat evolved being registered as a temperature change.
