HEAT STABILIZATION [5 records]

Record 1 2006-04-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
  • Plastics Manufacturing
  • Rubber
  • Paints and Varnishes (Industries)
DEF

Any chemical compound that, admixed with a thermoplastic resin, selectively absorbs ultraviolet rays; used to prevent ultraviolet degradation of polymers.

CONT

When a polymer absorbs light, it may reradiate the absorbed energy at much longer wave lengths(heat), at slightly longer wave lengths(luminescence), or the energy may be transferred to another molecule. When none of these processes is operative, the absorbed light energy may cause bond breaking leading to degradation. By incorporating an ultraviolet absorbing compound into the plastic, it is possible to essentially eliminate all of the above processes, since the absorber even at concentrations as low as 0. 5% can effectively compete for the incident ultraviolet radiation, thus protecting the plastic form degradation. A second approach to stabilization is to incorporate an additive which, though not an absorber in itself, can accept energy from the polymer substrate, and thus, leave the polymer intact. Since protection of plastics against light degradation can be achieved by these two mechanisms, the broader term "ultraviolet stabilizer" or "light stabilizer" is used to refer to such additives.

Domaine(s)
  • Éléments et composés chimiques
  • Plasturgie
  • Caoutchouc
  • Peintures et vernis (Industries)
DEF

OBS

agent anti-UV : terme normalisé par l'AFNOR.

Record 2 2004-09-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Synthetic Fabrics
  • Textiles: Preparation and Processing
  • Man-Made Construction Materials
DEF

The process of stabilizing the structure and shape of fibers or fabrics by applying heat.

CONT

Preshrinking of cotton or "heat setting" of synthetics may be necessary for dimensional stability. The effectiveness of heat setting depends on the original stabilization temperature used. If the synthetic fabric is later exposed to a significantly greater temperature, dimensional change can occur.

OBS

thermosetting: having the property of becoming permanently hard and rigid when heated or cured: capable of changing from a plastic or fusible state to an infusible or insoluble state by a chemical reaction affected by heat or other means and leading to a complex high polymer.

Key term(s)
  • heatsetting

Domaine(s)

  • Apprêt et traitements divers (Textiles)
  • Matériaux de construction artificiels
DEF

CONT

It is possible to produce uniforms with such protection specifically for wear in high temperature regions, but by their very nature protective suits are hot and uncomfortable for prolonged periods of wear due to the absorbent layers of activated charcoal granules or fibres that they incorporate. These granules and fibres act as a barrier to the escape of body heat which could, in extremes, lead to physical collapse due to heat exhaustion. This has given rise to proposals for liquid cooling or body temperature stabilization units supplying webs of cooling pipes worn close to the skin.

OBS
