HEAT STABILIZING [7 records]

Subject field(s)
  • Oceanography
  • Climate Change
CONT

Thermohaline convection is a wellknown process in oceanography : warm salted layers on the top of cool unsalted ones rapidly diffuse downwards even in the presence of stabilizing temperature gradients, due to the different diffusivities of heat and salt. When a warm salted blob falls down in cool fresh water, the heat diffuses out more quickly than the salt. The blob goes on falling due to its weight until it mixes with the surroundings...

CONT

CONT

Stabilizing salts are added to milk to improve heat stability.... disodium hydrogen phosphate(DSHP) and trisodium citrate(TSC) should be used if the natural pH falls on the acidic side of the heat stability maximum, whereas sodium dihydrogen phosphate(SDHP) or calcium chloride should be used when the natural pH falls on the alkaline side of the heat stability maximum, with phosphate generally being the most effective stabilizing salt.

CONT

CONT

Mothballing is the process of stabilizing a facility so that no damage occurs to the facility should it make sense at a later time to incur the capital expenditures associated with continuing to operate, extending the life, or repowering the facility. Typically, a decision to mothball a facility might be made as a hedge against, or in anticipation of, changes in market conditions; i. e., increases in relative fuel prices, or an increase in the value of installed capacity.... Typical activities involved in mothballing a facility might include the following types of activities intended to preserve existing equipment :-’Racking Out’ or removal and storage of motor control center circuit breakers or 'switchgear’(this would also be done for a facility that has been retired and is scheduled for dismantling)-Placing a heat source or desiccants in the furnace to maintain a temperature above the dew point(at which condensation collects and corrodes the boiler structures.)-The application of grease or other coatings to reduce corrosion of components such as pumps and motors.-The installation of an air desiccant system to blow dry air through the steam turbine, condenser, boiler tubes and pipes.

CONT

decommissioning: Shutting down and placing a plant permanently out of service ... The three stages of decommissioning are mothballing, encasement and dismantling.

OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Synthetic Fabrics
  • Textiles: Preparation and Processing
  • Man-Made Construction Materials
DEF

The process of stabilizing the structure and shape of fibers or fabrics by applying heat.

CONT

Preshrinking of cotton or "heat setting" of synthetics may be necessary for dimensional stability. The effectiveness of heat setting depends on the original stabilization temperature used. If the synthetic fabric is later exposed to a significantly greater temperature, dimensional change can occur.

OBS

thermosetting: having the property of becoming permanently hard and rigid when heated or cured: capable of changing from a plastic or fusible state to an infusible or insoluble state by a chemical reaction affected by heat or other means and leading to a complex high polymer.

DEF

DEF

the phenomenon which occurs when a flame moves away from a burner, often resulting in the flame being extinguished. A flame blows off when the air-fuel mixture leaves the burner at a velocity greater than the velocity with which the flame front progresses through the mixture.

CONT

Combustion refers to a reaction that generates extreme heat by compounding fuel with atmospheric oxygen. "Catalytic combustion" is designed to enhance this reaction by catalytic assistance. Characteristic of this is stabilizing the combustion without flame blow-off even when using less-concentrated fuel.
