Many crude vegetable oils contain large amounts of phosphatides or "break" material. This material is very similar to the parent triglyceride except that one of the fatty acid chains has been replaced by a compound of phosphorus. The phosphatides precipitate as a gelatinous mass when the oil is heated to 260°C to 300°C.... In such a test, the oil is carefully heated in a test tube; if any break is present, the oil clouds at about 260°C and within 5° to 25°C the break will have separated. [A standard] testing method measuring flame spread, fuel contribution and smoke density of materials under controlled conditions.

The walls and floor are constructed of refractory fire brick. One wall has observation windows along its length. Flames from two burners at one end are forced down the tunnel by a steady draught of air at 1. 2 m/s. These burner flames are about 1. 37 m long, release heat at a steady rate of about 90 kW, and impinge directly on the test specimen, which is mounted either on the floor or on the ceiling of the tunnel. This exposure is similar in intensity to what occurs when a small piece of furniture leaning against a wall is set on fire. The tunnel is calibrated by adjusting the rate of heat release of the burners so that it takes about five and a half minutes for flames to reach the exhaust end of the tunnel when the specimen is 18 mm select-grade red oak. In the exhaust duct at the end of the tunnel are a light source and detector for measuring smoke and a thermocouple for determining heat released.

The new 60-megawatt segmented arc heater, known as H3, significantly improves AEDC' s [Arnold Engineering Development Center] present arc capabilities... Arc heaters such as H3 produce the high pressures and heat fluxes required for testing thermal protection materials used for nose tips and heat shields. Arc heater tests provide information to manufacturers about the probable condition a space vehicle component would experience following re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. An arc heater is basically a large tube that high-pressure air runs through. The air is heated by discharging tens of megawatts of power using an electric arc similar to a lightning bolt. At the nozzle, or downstream end of the heater, test personnel install models or materials and subject them to simulated high pressure and temperature conditions generated by the bolt. Temperatures range from 5, 000 to 15, 000 degrees Fahrenheit, requiring each component to be water-cooled.
