A special case of process lapse rate, defined as the rate of decrease of temperature with height of an air parcel lifted in a saturation-adiabatic process through an atmosphere in hydrostatic equilibrium. 3, record 1, English, - saturated%20adiabatic%20lapse%20rate
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
So, if condensation is taking place, latent heat is being released to the surrounding air. So you have two opposing trends going on at the same time within this parcel of air. It's rising and cooling, but it's also condensing and being warmed. Which one will win out? That is, will the air get colder, or will it get warmer? Well, what happens is that the air will still cool off, but not as fast. If water vapor in the air is condensing, the adiabatic rate is less. The air is only cooling off at a rate of about 5 degrees C/1000 meters(3. 3 deg per 1000 feet). This is called the Saturated adiabatic lapse rate(or the wet adiabatic lapse rate, or the moist adiabatic lapse rate, depending on the textbook you are using). The saturated lapse rate varies with the original temperature of the air parcel, but 5 degrees C/1000 meters is a commonly used value. 6, record 1, English, - saturated%20adiabatic%20lapse%20rate
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The pseudoadiabatic lapse rate is so close to the moist adiabatic lapse rate that meteorologists tend to ignore this difference and often refer to them synonymously. In fact, on adiabatic charts (or pseudoadiabatic charts), the moist adiabatic lapse rate lines are referred to interchangeably as moist, saturated, or pseudoadiabatic. 7, record 1, English, - saturated%20adiabatic%20lapse%20rate

Introducing rams to a group of ewes that have been kept apart from the rams for a period of time results in the induction of heat about one estrous cycle interval later. This "ram effect" has been used to induce synchronized breeding activity in sheep flocks during the non-seasonal periods. The ram effect is also used to advance the breeding season. As no physical or visual contact between rams and ewes is needed, this effect has been suggested to be mediated by pheromones. 2, record 4, English, - ram%20effect

Several thread suppliers sell spools of monofilament thread, which is very fine and comes in either nylon or polyester. Many quilters prefer polyester monofilament thread because it doesn’t stretch as much as the nylon, and therefore isn’t as likely to tangle. In addition, nylon thread doesn’t do well in heat and it may discolor over time. Still, other quilters choose nylon [invisible] thread for its performance and say it looks the most like hand quilting. 4, record 13, English, - invisible%20thread

Mothballing is the process of stabilizing a facility so that no damage occurs to the facility should it make sense at a later time to incur the capital expenditures associated with continuing to operate, extending the life, or repowering the facility. Typically, a decision to mothball a facility might be made as a hedge against, or in anticipation of, changes in market conditions; i. e., increases in relative fuel prices, or an increase in the value of installed capacity.... Typical activities involved in mothballing a facility might include the following types of activities intended to preserve existing equipment :-’Racking Out’ or removal and storage of motor control center circuit breakers or 'switchgear’(this would also be done for a facility that has been retired and is scheduled for dismantling)-Placing a heat source or desiccants in the furnace to maintain a temperature above the dew point(at which condensation collects and corrodes the boiler structures.)-The application of grease or other coatings to reduce corrosion of components such as pumps and motors.-The installation of an air desiccant system to blow dry air through the steam turbine, condenser, boiler tubes and pipes. 2, record 24, English, - mothballing

The half cooling time measures the time that is taken to remove 50% of the heat from the apple. For example, if fruit temperatures are at 72°F in storage room at 32°F, the temperature difference between the fruit and final desired temperature is 40°F. A half cooling time of 8 hours means that it will take that time to reduce fruit temperatures by half this amount, i. e., 20°F, to reach a temperature of 52°F, and a further 8 hours to reduce fruit temperatures by 10°F to 42°F. The Fire Radiative Power product(FRP, in megawatts) provides information on the measured radiant heat output of detected fires. It has been demonstrated in small-scale experimental fires that the amount of radiant heat energy liberated per unit time(the Fire Radiative Power) is related to the rate at which fuel is being consumed. This is a direct result of the combustion process, whereby carbon-based fuel is oxidised to CO2 with the release of a certain "heat yield. "Therefore, measuring this FRP and integrating it over the lifetime of the fire provides an estimate of the total Fire Radiative Energy(FRE), which for wildfires should be proportional to the total mass of fuel biomass combusted. 1, record 45, English, - fire%20radiative%20power

An X-ray tube providing rectification of the high voltage by itself. 1, record 55, English, - self%2Drectifying%20tube
Record number: 55, Textual support number: 1 OBS
This is accomplished when an X-ray tube is connected directly to the secondary windings of the high voltage transformer without any intervening rectifier. When the cathode is negative with respect to the anode, electrons will flow from the cathode filament to the anode and produce X-rays. During the next half of the electrical cycle, the anode is negative with respect to the cathode, and electrons could flow in the opposite direction. However, as long as the anode is kept cool, no electrons will be emitted from the anode, and no current will flow. The result is that of half wave rectification, where only half of the cycle of the high-voltage current is used to produce X-rays. 1, record 55, English, - self%2Drectifying%20tube
Record number: 55, Textual support number: 2 OBS
An obvious disadvantage of self-rectification, as opposed to supplying the X-ray tube with an already rectified direct current, is that exposure times must be increased since X-ray production occurs during only half of the time the current is applied. Secondly, repeated exposures could heat the anode to such an extent that electrons are also emitted from the anode. This could result in a reverse flow of electrons in the X-ray tube with excessive heating and destruction of the filament. 1, record 55, English, - self%2Drectifying%20tube

The aim of the EC Shellfish Hygiene Directive(91/492/EEC) is to protect consumers of shellfish. It classifies shellfish harvesting areas according to the quality of shellfish populations. The classification determines the conditions under which shellfish harvested from those waters can be offered for sale. Shellfish from Class A waters can be sold direct for consumption, but shellfish from Class B or C waters must be cleansed by relaying in cleaner water for varying lengths of time or, in the case of class C, heat treated. Waters below Class C are prohibited for Shellfish harvesting. 1, record 74, English, - class%20A%20water

The enormous current generated during a short circuit produces damaging heat at a much faster rate than can be safely dispersed. Interrupt the current and you stop adding heat to the system. Time is a critical determinant of the amount of heat(energy) added. An electrical short that lasts three cycles, for example, adds six times the energy of one lasting just one-half cycle. It's in this sense that all circuit breakers and fuses "limit" current. Add a current limiting device, i. e. ususally a fuse, but sometimes a circuit breaker and fuse in series, that restricts the fault current to a value less than the starter's short-circuit withstand rating. 3, record 85, English, - current%20limiting%20device

Although the redesigned station is now being built as much as possible on the ground, the entire monolithic structure cannot be lobbed into orbit in one piece. The sections must be small enough to fit inside the Space Shuttle payload bay, which limits segments to about 15 ft(4. 6 m) in diameter and 45 ft(13. 7 m) in length. By the time the space frame truss segments are ready for launch, they have been fitted with such hardware as electric lines, batteries, antennas, gyroscopes, robotic arms, solar panel assemblies, and heat radiators. The actual truss is hard to identify once all the equipment is loaded onto it; there's no wasted space. Once the segments are in space the astronauts will simply bolt them together with a few fasteners and then connect hoses, ducts, and other utilities by plugging them into ports between sections. 2, record 88, English, - truss%20segment

The Ausroc 3(A3) launch vehicle has a liquid fuelled motor that burns JA-1 kerosene with liquid oxygen, and uses regenerative cooling. The motor produces 35 kN at sea level and has a burn time of 80 seconds. The motor is gimballed to facilitate pitch and yaw control. The wall of the combustion chamber, throat and expansion nozzle consists of 102 stainless steel tubes stacked side by side running parallel to the motor axis. The tubes will be brazed together and the assembly wrapped in a carbon fibre composite. The composite wrapping is used to relieve to tubes of the hoop stress generated by the combustion pressure(2 MPa), whilst the tubes contain the combustion heat(3500 K). The top end of the motor has a kerosene inlet manifolt, oxygen dome and injector block. The kerosene inlet manifold delivers kerosene to every second motor tube, where it travels down to the arse end of the motor. Here it enters the lower kerosene manifold which is a simple plenum ring. This allows the kerosene to flow into the other alternate tubes which deliver it back up to the inlet manifold. The inlet manifold then directs the kerosene to the injector block, which sprays it and the liquid oxygen into the combustion chamber. 2, record 93, English, - liquid%20fuelled%20motor

2, record 100, French, - veilleuse%20%C3%A0%20allumage%20intermittent
