HEAT TREATED STEEL [9 records]

Record 1 2006-06-02

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hand Tools
  • Collection Items (Museums and Heritage)
CONT

The precision ground flutes and cutting edges allow the hollow punches to make clean holes in gaskets, leather, plastic, rubber, vinyl, and other soft materials. Constructed of heat treated carbon steel with knurled bodies for a secure grip.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Outillage à main
  • Objets de collection (Muséologie et Patrimoine)
OBS

Pluriel : des emporte-pièces.

OBS

Record 2 2003-06-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Heat Treatment of Metals
DEF

The loss of carbon from the surface of a ferrous alloy as a result of heating in a medium that reacts with the carbon.

OBS

During the rolling of steel hot surfaces are exposed to the decarburising effects of oxygen in the atmosphere and as a result the surface is depleted of carbon. In steels where the components are to be subsequently heat treated, it is necessary to remove the decurbarised surface by maching.

Key term(s)
  • decarburisation
  • decarbonisation

French

Domaine(s)
  • Traitement à chaud des métaux
DEF

Record 5 1989-06-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Soil Tests (Construction)
  • Measuring Instruments (Engineering)
  • Soil Mechanics (Engineering)
DEF

Device for calibrating load indicators of testing machines, for indicating the magnitude of the deformation under load.

DEF

A steel ring which has been accurately turned, heat treated, and polished. It is precisely calibrated in a testing machine by measuring its deflection for different loads and can be used for measuring applied loads on a structure.

CONT

"Penetrometer": A cone penetrator having the assemblage of a deflection dial indicator mounted inside a proving ring, which is coupled to the drill rod projecting above the ground. Force is applied to the top of the proving ring, and the amount required to drive the cone into the formation being tested registers, in pounds on the dial indicator.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Essais du sol (Construction)
  • Instruments de mesure (Ingénierie)
  • Mécanique des sols
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Joining Elements (Mechanical Components)
  • Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance
CONT

Preload indicating(PLI) washers consist of two concentric steel rings sandwiched between two close-tolerance washers that are heat treated to a minimum of 160, 000 psi and placed between the material and the nut, or under the bolt head, and become a permanent part of the installation. As the nut is tightened, it compresses the inner washer which is thicker than the outer washer, until the outer washer cannot be moved. This is the desired preload of the bolt.

  • Metal Columns and Foundations

CONT

Water Filling. The principle of water cooling structural elements is now well established.(...) Water inside a structural member exposed to a building fire will absorb heat and maintain steel temperatures below the critical level of approximately 550°C. The heat is dissipated by convection to other non-exposed areas of the system and by conversion of the water to steam which is vented.(...) In high-rise structures, columns may be divided into zone levels(...) in order to limit the hydrostatic pressure at the bottom of the zone. Water in the system is generally treated with potassium carbonate in quantities sufficient to prevent freezing during winter, and potassium nitrate to inhibit corrosion.

CONT

Depending upon the original rim thickness, steel wheels are classified as multiple wear, two wear, or one wear wheels(...) cast steel wheels are identified by marking either stamped on back rim or hub face or cast on wheel plate.
