Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Prior to the 1880s, ships used solid ballast materials such as rocks and sand, which had to be manually shoveled into cargo holds, and similarly discharged when cargo was to be loaded on board. If not properly secured, solid ballast was prone to shifting in heavy seas causing instability. A fresh egg is heavy in proportion to its size and becomes lighter as it ages. A fresh egg sinks in cold water whilst a stale egg floats. 1, record 25, French, - r%C3%A9acteur%20MAPLE

Yet in actual fires in museums, heavy water damage has resulted from fire department operations with hose lines. Sprinkler protection avoids this, placing a small amount of water directly on the fire and alerting the fire department at the same time. Nuclear Power Demonstration reactor. This was the prototype CANDU reactor, and the first power reactor in Canada. It was located upstream of AECL' s Chalk River laboratories, along the Ottawa River's south shore(i. e. in Ontario). The reactor had a maximum continuous output of 22 MWe gross(19. 5 MWe net)... The reactor was built as a joint AECL/Ontario Hydro/Canadian General Electric project, and was initially intended to use a vertically-fuelled pressure vessel reactor. The design was changed in 1957 to natural uranium fuel bundles in horizontal pressure tubes in unpressurized heavy water moderator, with on-line refuelling. These are hallmarks of the CANDU reactor. The reactor had 132 fuel channels(each fuel channel comprised a pressure tube inside a calandria tube) and the coolant leaving the channels was 7. 2 MPa and 277°C. The main reactivity control was by adjusting the heavy-water moderator level, which could be rapidly dumped for fast shut down. NPD was finally shut down on May 5 1987, for economic reasons... 4, record 28, English, - nuclear%20power%20demonstration%20reactor

The jigging cycle for coal may be represented as a sine wave... in which water velocity is plotted against time. Starting from rest, the water commences to rise through the closely packed bed of coal with increasing velocity. Dilation of this bed begins with the loosening of the uppermost stratum.(In jigging coal it is possible to apply water so as to toss the whole bed solidly upward and then to allow it to open out upward and downward, but this is not feasible with heavy minerals.) As the water column attains a rising velocity of 100 mm./sec., the upper part of the coal bed opens and begins to teeter. Velocity continues to increase, and layer after layer opens until the whole bed is dilated and teetering. Then, as the pulsion stroke passes its peak, the velocity of the water lessens and the suction stroke begins. 5, record 32, English, - dilation

A built-up roofing consists of plies or layers of roofing felt bonded together on site with hot bitumen. A protective surface coating of gravel or slag is sometimes embedded in a heavy top coating of hot bitumen. It is laid down to conform to the roof deck, and to protect all angles formed by the roof deck with projecting surfaces, and forms a single-unit flexible waterproofed membrane fastened to the deck by cementing and nailing. The simple principle on flat roofs is to turn the membrane up to form a skirting or base flashing on the vertical surfaces, making a large watertight tray. The only outlets from this tray are the roof drains to dispose of water. 3, record 47, English, - build%2Dup%20roofing

Distillation extractive. Hoarfrost [is] a deposit of interlocking ice crystals formed by direct sublimation on objects, usually those of small diameter freely exposed to the air, such as tree branches, plant stems and leaf edges, wires, and poles. Also, frost may form on the skin of an aircraft when a cold aircraft flies into warm and moist air or when it passes through air that is supersaturated with water vapor. Hoarfrost is formed similarly to the way dew is formed except that the temperature of the frosted object must be below freezing. Frost forms when air with a dew point below freezing is brought to saturation by cooling. In addition to its formation on freely exposed objects(air hoar), hoarfrost also forms inside unheated buildings and vehicles, in caves, in crevasses(crevasse hoar), on snow surfaces(surface hoar), and in air spaces within snow, especially below a snow crust(depth hoar). Hoarfrost is more fluffy and feathery than rime, which in turn is lighter than glaze. Cleaned corn grain is washed thoroughly and then steeped for 36 to 40 hours in approximately twice its volume of water containing 0. 2% SO2 at a temperature of 46-50 [degrees] C. As the steep water is drawn from the corn it contains between 6 and 9 lbs of solids per 100 lbs of water. The corn should be soft to the touch, but must not be slimy or smeary-in the latter case it was steeped either too hot or too long. The steep liquor is then evaporated [under 25 mm Hg pressure] in a "Swenson" evaporator to what is called heavy steep liquor with a gravity of 16 to 20 [degrees] Bé and containing 50-60% of solids. In this form it is sold to manufacturer of antibiotics who may have their own specifications as to age, gravity and SO2 content. 4, record 65, English, - corn%20steep%20liquor

1, record 65, French, - eau%20de%20mac%C3%A9ration%20du%20ma%C3%AFs

Technology Canada partnerships investment promotes sustainable development in deep oil sands extraction.... The project involves developing a water recycling technology that will remove environmental and economic barriers to heavy oil production using the steam-assisted gravity drainage(SAGD) system. With SAGD, steam injected into the formation from a horizontal well decreases the viscosity of the heavy oil and allows it to flow to a second parallel well where it is piped to the surface. This process uses the equivalent of three barrels of steam to produce one barrel of heavy oil. 5, record 83, English, - steam%2Dassisted%20gravity%20drainage

4, record 83, French, - drainage%20par%20gravit%C3%A9%20au%20moyen%20de%20vapeur

The slackwater darter uses two different, but adjacent, breeding and nonbredding habitats.... Breeding habitat is seepage water in open fields or woods. The water in the breeding area, about 4 to 8 centimeters deep, flows slowly into an adjacent stream(the nonbreeding habitat). Since the breeding habitat is usually 30 to 45 centimeters above the stream, the stream water must periodically rise(as it does during heavy rains) to give darters access to the breeding grounds. 2, record 96, English, - breeding%20habitat

Paleoplacers, like placers, may be formed wherever vigorous water or air currents have sorted heavy and light, large and small, mineral and rock clasts resulting in the formation of lenses or layers containing heavy minerals... and greater abundance than elsewhere in a clastic sedimentary formation. The term is generally applied only to those heavy mineral accumulations that are notably enriched in particular commodities-e. g. gold paleoplacers-and implies a provenance containing special primary sources of these commodities in addition to sources of the more common heavy minerals. 5, record 99, English, - paleoplacer
