Buying a "protective" call to hedge a short position. This strategy is usually referred to as a "hedged short sale". The investor may have sold a stock short(perhaps because no puts on the stock were available for purchase) and then decided to hedge the short sale by buying an equivalent call on the stock. In another scenario, the investor may have bought a call on the stock first and then decided to sell the equivalent number of shares short.
