A pole with bucket for raising water used especially in Egypt. 4, record 2, English, - shaduf
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Shaduf: Primitive device used to lift water from a well or stream for irrigation purposes. Essentially the device consists of a long boom balanced across a horizontal support form 8 to 10 ft (2.4 3 m) above the ground. The beam has a long, thin end and a short, stubby end. From the long end a bucket or similar container is suspended, and on the shorter end there is a counterweight. The operator pulls on a rope that lowers the long end of the boom so that the bucket submerges and is filled with water. He then releases the rope, allowing the counterweight to raise the bucket to the desired level, and then empties the bucket and repeats the process. 5, record 2, English, - shaduf
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Shadufs can be used in a series where it is desired to raise water to a height exceeding the range of a single one. It has been suggested that the massive stones used in building the pyramids of Egypt were raised by an ancient variant of this device. 5, record 2, English, - shaduf

White Pass and Yukon Railway, at 175 km long, was the steepest pitched railway in Canada. Work began in 1898, at the height of the Klondike Gold Rush, to provide transportation from Skagway, Alaska, to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Building of the narrow gauge railway was an extremely difficult engineering feat, requiring extensive blasting, tunnels and precarious bridging. Thirty-five of the 35 000 men who worked on construction were killed. The summit of White Pass was reached in February 1899 and the "last spike" was driven at Carcross on 29 July 1900. The gold was exhausted by the time work was complete, though the line struggled along carrying passengers and freight. The mining boom in the Yukon revived the railway, as lead-zinc was hauled from Faro, Mayo and Clinton Creek. The shutdown of the WP&Y in 1982, as a result of the collapse of the mining boom, deprived Whitehorse of some employment and its sea rail link. 1, record 6, English, - White%20Pass%20%26%20Yukon%20Route%20Railway

1, record 9, French, - construction%20en%20%C3%A9paisseur

Sub-Rack Accommodations and EXPRESS Rack. The accommodations for research on ISS [International Space Station] are designed to give a user the option of using what amount to "central facilities" for conducting their research, or developing their own experimental equipment from scratch.... If no central facility meets a given investigator's requirements, they can consider building "investigation-specific" equipment that is unique to their needs. Such equipment will typically be allocated a sub-portion of an ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack] based on a unit of space called a Mid-deck Locker Equivalent(MLE). This unit has dimensions roughly based on the Space Shuttle's Mid-deck Storage Locker(MDL), which has an internal 0. 06 m³(2. 0 ft³) volume and approximate dimensions of 43. 2 cm(17 in) width x 50. 8 cm(20 in) depth x 25. 4 cm(10 in) height. Conditional Use Zoning. A request for rezoning may include conditions which restrict the use of the land further and more particularly than the basic zoning category does. Example : a property owner applies to rezone his property from R-10(medium density residential) to O&1-2(office and institutional). This office zone has no building height limit. After discussion with nearby residents, who object to the construction of a tall building on this site, the property owner includes a condition with the rezoning request; the condition limits building height to, say 50 feet. The conditions are attached to the zoning and are enforced as zoning regulations. Conditional use zoning permits modifications of the zoning regulations, to fit the particular needs of a situation. It is often thought of as a bargaining tool. 2, record 15, English, - conditional%20use%20zoning

FAR(floor area ratio) : the gross floor area of the building to the area of the lot on which it's built. Each zoning district classification contains an FAR limit. A building can contain floor area equal to the lot area multiplied by the floor area ratio(FAR) of the district in which the lot is located. In a zone where the permitted FAR is a maximum of 1. 0, a 40, 000 sq foot lot(approximately an acre) could have 40, 000 sq ft building. Staying within the Far limit, a developer might build a 4-story building at 10, 000 sq ft per floor, or a 2-story building at 20, 000 sq ft per floor. Height rules permitting, it could also be a 10-story building at 4, 000 sq feet per floor. If the FAR is 4. 0(the greatest FAR currently permitted in Cambridge), the same lot could have a 160, 000 sq ft building. Parking areas, cellar space, floor space in open balconies, elevator or stair-bulkheads, and other non-habitable space within the building do count as part of the FAR. 2, record 17, English, - floor%20area%20ratio%20limit

In France, the central government sets a national Floor Area Ratio limit of 1, and 1.5 in the Paris region (the Plafond Légal de Densité). Regardless of what density is permitted in a local POS or ZAC, developers who wish to build above the nationally permitted FAR must purchase the rights to do so from the municipality. This system is technically a form of betterment recoupment, since it applies to land whose value has been raised primarily because of planning and zoning allowances. 1, record 17, English, - floor%20area%20ratio%20limit

NDHQ 97 is the largest accommodation project ever undertaken by the Department of National Defence or the government. It's more than just moving people from building to building. It's refitting buildings and general office space, using a new design concept called the universal footprint. It's adapting accommodation to re-engineered organizations. It's also purchasing and installing furniture best suited to a modern, dynamic organization. The headquarters will have a new look. In the four buildings... corridors will run along the windows. Offices will be clustered at the centre of each floor. Major traffic will flow outside work areas, not through them. People working in teams will have work areas designed for teams. Offices will have more natural light, better air conditioning and better ventilation. Some screens will have glazed windows to allow natural light to spill through. Each workstation will include large, well-lit work surfaces for computers and overall, will have more usable workspace. Plenty of storage space will be located above and below work surfaces. But employees will be encouraged to make the most of their space by storing information on diskette, rather than in filing cabinets. The look will be cleaner and less cluttered. And whether people are tall or short, they’ll be able to adjust their desks, chairs and computers to the height that's right for them. 3, record 27, English, - universal%20footprint

4, record 27, French, - plan%20universel
