To produce the UV index forecast, Environment and Climate Change Canada takes data from ozone measuring stations across the country to determine the present thickness of the ozone layer. A computer model then forecasts the thickness of the ozone layer over Canada for the next day. Combining the forecast of the ozone layer with data about the height and the angle of the sun gives a UV forecast for the next day, for a clear sunny sky. Adding the amount of cloud predicted in the weather forecast then gives the amount of UV that can actually be expected. The forecast gives the maximum amount of UV expected for the day. On a clear day with no clouds, this occurs at noon(or 1 p. m. for those on daylight time), when the sun is highest in the sky. 3, record 4, English, - ultraviolet%20index%20forecast

1, record 4, French, - pr%C3%A9vision%20de%20l%27indice%20UV

An increase in the thickness of clouds as described by cloud liquid water content would generally increase the albedo of the clouds ... Greatest albedo change for given increase in liquid water is possible for relatively thin clouds since thick clouds are essentially saturated in brightness. Various suggestions have been offered as to how clouds might change with a warmer climate. A warmer atmosphere would hold more water vapour and possibly also more liquid water, hence cloud thickness could well increase. 1, record 13, English, - cloud%20thickness

The comb nephoscope consists essentially of a series of rods assembled in the form of a comb, and mounted on a vertical rod with the "teeth" of the comb horizontal. The vertical rod is free to turn, and is rotated by means of a pulley and rope device. The observer selects a recognizable feature of the cloud base, and then rotates the comb of the nephoscope until that feature appears to move along the longitudinal member of the comb.... By using the "teeth" of the comb, and a timepiece, the observer may time the motion of the cloud. The speed of the cloud may then be determined, provided its height is known. 1, record 16, English, - comb

The MLS detects naturally occurring microwave thermal emissions from Earth's limb to create vertical profiles of atmospheric gasses, temperature, pressure and cloud ice. MLS looks 90° from the angle of UARS’ [Upper Atmosphere Research Statellite] orbit. Thermal radiation enters the instrument through a three-mirror antenna system. The antenna mechanically scans in the vertical plane through the atmospheric limb every 65. 5 seconds. The scan covers a height range from the surface up to 90 km(55 miles). Upon entering the instrument, the signal from the antenna is separated into three signals for processing by different radiometers. The 63-GHz radiometer measures temperature and pressure. The 183-GHz radiometer measures water vapor and ozone. The 205-GHz radiometer measures ClO, ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitric acid and water vapor. 2, record 18, English, - microwave%20limb%20sounder

Record number: 21, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The supercell tornado is the most common and most violent type of tornado. These storms are formed from the rotating supercell thunderstorm, due to a clockwise change in wind direction with height. This changing of the wind direction with height causes horizontal tubes of spinning air to form. A thunderstorm updraft tilts the horizontally spinning tube of air into the vertical and stretches it out forming a small area of low pressure called a "Meso Low" which enhances the low level winds which ultimately leads to the formation of a tornado. Supercell tornadoes can exist for up to six hours, grow to diameters greater than a mile, and produce winds up to 300 mph. The visible funnel cloud forms because of the significant air pressure drop in the region of the meso low and tornado. The lower air pressure allows water vapor to condense into cloud droplets at a lower altitude, forming a cloud around the spinning funnel of air. In areas of the country, such as Colorado, where low level moisture may be lacking, a tornado may occur with no visible funnel cloud at all. 3, record 21, English, - supercell%20tornado

2, record 21, French, - tornade%20supercellulaire

Satellite image. ... The most common is the infrared image which indicates the temperature of the cloud tops (or the land or sea in cloud free areas). Visible images are also used, but are only useful during daylight hours. Infrared images are most commonly used as they can be taken through night-time hours. 4, record 31, English, - infrared%20image

These images come from satellites which remain above a fixed point on the Earth(ie. they are "geostationary"). The infrared picture shows the same view but looking at a part of the spectrum which our eyes do not detect. The infrared pictures allow us to measure the temperature of the cloud tops, which can be used to determine their height. The whiter clouds are colder than the greyer clouds in this image. Infrared images can be recorded 24 hours a day. Visible pictures can only be made during daylight hours. 5, record 31, English, - infrared%20image

D. B. Turner(1961) introduced a version of Pasquill' s scheme in which the incoming solar radiation is classified in terms of elevation angle, cloud amount and cloud height. This stability classification system has been made completely objective so that an electronic computer can be used to compute stability classes. The stability classes proposed by Turner are as follows : A=extremely unstable; B=unstable; C=slightly unstable; D=neutral; E=slightly stable; F=stable, and G=extremely stable. 1, record 32, English, - Turner%26rsquo%3Bs%20method
