The scratcher is a simple device, consisting of a band of steel that fits around a joint of casing, and stiff wire fingers or cable loops sticking out in all directions around the band(360-degree coverage). A scratcher resembles a bottlebrush, but its diameter is greater than its height. Importantly, for scratchers to be effective, the casing must be moved. This movement may be reciprocal motion in and out of the wellbore, rotary motion, or both. In general, the more motion, the better the cement job will be.

A pole with bucket for raising water used especially in Egypt.

Shaduf: Primitive device used to lift water from a well or stream for irrigation purposes. Essentially the device consists of a long boom balanced across a horizontal support form 8 to 10 ft (2.4 3 m) above the ground. The beam has a long, thin end and a short, stubby end. From the long end a bucket or similar container is suspended, and on the shorter end there is a counterweight. The operator pulls on a rope that lowers the long end of the boom so that the bucket submerges and is filled with water. He then releases the rope, allowing the counterweight to raise the bucket to the desired level, and then empties the bucket and repeats the process.

Shadufs can be used in a series where it is desired to raise water to a height exceeding the range of a single one. It has been suggested that the massive stones used in building the pyramids of Egypt were raised by an ancient variant of this device.

Laser force microscope senses topography by moving a tungsten or silicon probe across a sample(typically a microelectronic component) at a height of a few nanometers. The tip is set vibrating at close to its resonance frequency. Attractive forces... called van der Waals attractions and the surface tension of water that condenses between tip and sample, pull on the tip, changing its resonance frequency and so reducing its vibration amplitude. The variation in the forces, and hence in tip travel, reveals surface relief. A laser probe tracks the tip by means of a beam that is split into two. One of the beams is reflected through a stationary prism; the other passes through a Bragg cell--a device that shifts the beam's frequency--and is reflected from the back of the probe. The beams are recombined, and their interference produces a signal(at the Bragg-cell frequency) that measures the tip vibration.

The comb nephoscope consists essentially of a series of rods assembled in the form of a comb, and mounted on a vertical rod with the "teeth" of the comb horizontal. The vertical rod is free to turn, and is rotated by means of a pulley and rope device. The observer selects a recognizable feature of the cloud base, and then rotates the comb of the nephoscope until that feature appears to move along the longitudinal member of the comb.... By using the "teeth" of the comb, and a timepiece, the observer may time the motion of the cloud. The speed of the cloud may then be determined, provided its height is known.

Laser Position Measurement. A commercially available position measuring device, Lasernet, was donated by the Namco Controls Corporation. A single narrow-beam laser is continuously swept across the field at a fixed height. A reflector of known geometry on the vehicle reflects the beam back to the device, which reports the initial angle, in the local geographic frame, at which a reflection is detected and the angular width over which the reflection is continuously detected. Knowing the geometry of the reflector, which should be independent of the heading of the aircraft, is sufficient to determine the vehicle's two-dimensional position in the local geographic frame.

Before being sold, leased or otherwise disposed of, a weighing machine or measuring machine that is of a class, type or design approved for use in trade and that is referred to in subsection 28(2) shall be marked "Not for Use in Trade until Inspected"("Ne pas utiliser dans le commerce avant l'inspection") or shall be marked in words that convey the same meaning, and such markings shall be in letters of not less than 12 mm or 1/2 inch in height and shall remain on the device until it has been inspected and is found to meet the requirements of the Act and these Regulations.
