HEIGHT FINDER RADAR [4 records]

Record 1 2016-05-27

English

Subject field(s)
  • Radar, Radio Guidance and Goniometry
  • Radio Transmission and Reception
CONT

A height finder antenna has the same possibility of azimuth rotation and also scans in elevation. The elevation may be positive or negative relative to horizontal. Importantly, it differs from the surveillance radar in not rotating at a constant rate. In fact it moves in azimuth and elevation quite unpredictably as far as the observer is concerned.

DEF

A method of winds-aloft observation; that is, the determination of wind speeds and directions in the atmosphere above a station.

OBS

It is accomplished by tracking a balloon-borne radar target, responder, or radiosonde transmitter with either radar or a radio direction finder. With a radio direction finder, the height data must be supplied by other means, normally by concurrent radiosonde observation. With radar, if height data are not otherwise supplied, the slant range must be recorded in addition to the angles of elevation and azimuth.
