In the 20th century, the quantitative description of the earth's waters has involved an increasing variety of measurements at a growing number of localities. These basic data include the intensity and duration of rainfall, the accumulation of snow, the height and discharge of streams, the levels and contents of lakes and reservoirs, the composition of dissolved solids and of sediments in water, and the evaporation rate from reservoirs. The analysis and interpretation of these data constitute what is called applied hydrology. 3, record 2, English, - applied%20hydrology

Another defence used on occasion is that of abnormal use. In Rae v. T. Eaton(Maritimes) Ltd., the manufacturer was absolved of liability for an injury to a child's eye when a can of artificial snow exploded while being banged on concrete, since "in its normal use, or in reasonably foreseeable use,(it) was harmless. 2, record 3, French, - emploi%20abusif

Snow snake is played on a track. Snow is piled up at the beginning of the track to a height of about 4 feet. Then the track gradually slopes downward to follow the contour of the earth. A log is then placed on top of the snow pile to make a track that the shooters must throw their snakes in. The community who has the best throws, wins. The best throwers win prizes but more importantly, bragging rights until the next event. 1, record 5, English, - snow%20snake

After a soft slab release, disintegration of the slab and air entrainment are very rapid and as the avalanche develops much of the mass is suspended well above ground level. As a result of the increased mean distance between snow particles in the flowing/air suspension, flow height increases, velocity increases, the avalanche assumes the form of a fluid... In some cases a large mass of the flowing snow is whirled into suspension and held above ground level by turbulence as a powder avalanche. The denser mass, comprised of large snow particles, remains closer to the ground and is called a flowing avalanche. 5, record 6, English, - flowing%20avalanche

The avalanche ran through the monitored site entirely, affecting the ski run below for a track of 50 m where it stopped its run leaving a deposit consisting of round-shaped blocks behind.... through a survey after the event, a series of very detailed nivologic information were collected... In particular strata profiles in proximity to the release zone and in correspondence to the major deposits along the gliding zone and the accumulation zone were carried out. Along the whole avalanche site a series of transverse sections were considered. In correspondence to these, values of the snow cover height were checked and analyses of stratigraphy of the snow cover able to single out snow masses which had been drifted by wind and deposited by the progressing avalanche. 1, record 13, English, - nivologic
