Reference crop evapotranspiration or reference evapotranspiration, denoted as ETo or ETref, is the estimation of the evapotranspiration from the "reference surface. "The reference surface is a hypothetical grass reference crop with an assumed crop height of 0. 12 m, a fixed surface resistance of 70 s/m and an albedo of 0. 23. The reference surface closely resembles an extensive surface of green, well-watered grass of uniform height, actively growing and completely shading the ground. The fixed surface resistance of 70 s/m implies a moderately dry soil surface resulting from about a weekly irrigation frequency. 1, record 1, English, - reference%20evapotranspiration

A mesocyclone is a vortex of air, approximately 2 to 10 miles in diameter, within a convective storm. In a mesocyclone, air rises and rotates around a vertical axis, usually in the same direction as low pressure systems. They are most often associated with a localised low-pressure region within a severe thunderstorm. Such storms can feature strong surface winds and severe hail. Mesocyclones often occur together with updrafts in supercells, where tornadoes may form. Mesocyclones are believed to form when strong changes of wind speed and/or direction with height("wind shear") sets parts of the lower atmosphere spinning in invisible tube-like rolls. The convective updraft of a thunderstorm is then thought to draw up this spinning air, tilting the rolls’ orientation upward(from parallel to the ground to perpendicular) and causing the entire updraft to rotate as a vertical column. 2, record 2, English, - mesocyclone

2, record 2, French, - m%C3%A9socyclone

If the earth were not rotating, the wind would blow exclusively from high to low pressure. Close to the earth, it would be slowed by friction between the atmosphere and the earth's surface but would maintain the same direction with height. However, since the earth undergoes rotation, there is an apparent force acting on horizontal atmospheric motions when examined from a point of reference on the earth's surface. For example, [as] viewed from space(the absolute frame of reference), the [wind] flow [continues] in a straight line. However, as viewed from the earth, the flow has undergone an apparent deflection to the right. 3, record 7, English, - horizontal%20atmospheric%20motion

A veering wind is a wind that turns clockwise with height. An example of a veering wind would be a southeast wind at the surface and a west wind at 700 millibars. The wind turns in the same direction as a clock from the surface to 700 millibars. A veering wind is associated with warm air advection and dynamic lifting... The magnitude of warm air advection is a function of wind speed and the pre-existing thermal gradient. Weak winds will result in weak advection. 2, record 25, French, - front%20de%20pression%20pr%C3%A9curseur

The mercury in the tube sinks slightly, creating above it a vacuum(the Torricellian vacuum). Atmospheric pressure on the surface of the mercury in the cistern supports the column in the tube, which varies in height with variations in atmospheric pressure and hence with changes in elevation, generally decreasing with increases in height above sea level. 3, record 33, English, - barometer%20cistern

Laser force microscope senses topography by moving a tungsten or silicon probe across a sample(typically a microelectronic component) at a height of a few nanometers. The tip is set vibrating at close to its resonance frequency. Attractive forces... called van der Waals attractions and the surface tension of water that condenses between tip and sample, pull on the tip, changing its resonance frequency and so reducing its vibration amplitude. The variation in the forces, and hence in tip travel, reveals surface relief. A laser probe tracks the tip by means of a beam that is split into two. One of the beams is reflected through a stationary prism; the other passes through a Bragg cell--a device that shifts the beam's frequency--and is reflected from the back of the probe. The beams are recombined, and their interference produces a signal(at the Bragg-cell frequency) that measures the tip vibration. 1, record 35, English, - laser%20force%20microscope

Unlike the STM, the AFM [Atomic Force Microscope] can scan nonconducting samples. It can do this because it uses optical technology, direct contact, and a laser, to sense the position of the tip in relation to the sample. The tip is very sharp and protrudes from a small flexible cantilever. The laser reflects off the top side of the tip and is directed to a split photodiode. The height of the surface of the sample deflects the cantilever causing the position of the laser on the photodiode to change. The difference in voltage from the photodiode elements provide a "picture" of the surface. 6, record 39, English, - atomic%20force%20microscope

The stratosphere is characterized by constant or increasing temperatures with increasing height and marked vertical stability. It owes its existence to heating of ozone by solar ultraviolet radiation, and its temperature varies from 85°C or less near the tropical tropopause to roughly 0°C at the stratopause. While the major constituents of the stratosphere are molecular nitrogen and oxygen, just as in the troposphere, the stratosphere contains a number of minor chemical species that result from photochemical reactions in the intense ultraviolet radiation environment. Chief among these is ozone, the presence of which shelters the underlying atmosphere and the earth's surface from exposure to potentially dangerous ultraviolet radiation. 2, record 45, English, - stratosphere

3, record 46, French, - tremplin

The term "transient" snowline is referred to as the boundary between a snow-covered surface and a bare surface at any given time... The transient snowline may reside on the ground as well as on the surface of a glacier. It is continuously changing, being near sea level during winter in some locations, or on the highest mountain slopes in the summer. The final height of the transient snowline at the end of the melting season will vary from year to year depending on changes in precipitation and temperatures. The term "climatic" snowline is given to the average elevation of the highest transient snowline on bare ground for a number of years. 1, record 48, English, - climatic%20snowline

Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. A "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. One speaks of "classical strokes" rather than "classical shot". A "blow" on the other hand is rather a blunt, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" can often be used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. 5, record 49, English, - stroke

When two electrical conductors are connected, an electrical resistance forms at the transition point between the two conductors. This resistance depends on the contact size and state of the surface. Since surfaces are never flat in microscopic measure, contact only takes place at the highest point. If one considers that the contact point is made by conductor metal on conductor metal, it is valid, as for all resistance, that the value is determined by specific resistance, the surface through which the current rate flows and the height of the "contact peaks. "The greater the amount of contact point surfaces there are, the lower the resulting resistance and consequently the greater is the capacity which the contact points can transmit. The conductors must be firmly pressed together so that the distance, the height of the "contact peaks" is as small as possible and the contact area as large as possible. 2, record 67, English, - transition%20resistance

Superrefraction... causes radio waves to refract downward with a curvature greater than normal. The result is an increased flattening of the effective earth... It can be seen that an "N" gradient of-157 units per kilometer yields a "k" equal to infinity. Under these conditions radio waves are propagated at a fixed height above the earth's surface, creating unusually long propagation distances and the potential for overreach interference with other signals occupying the same frequency allocation. 4, record 69, English, - super%2Drefraction

Some water level recorders utilize a float on the surface of the water which is attached to a moveable gear in the recorder. A rise or fall of the water surface causes the float to rise or fall. This rotates the gear and the movement is recorded. Other water level gauges monitor either relative or absolute pressure at a point under the water surface. This pressure measurement can then be converted to height of the water surface. Still other water level recorders monitor the travel time of sound waves generated and received at a point above the water surface. The MLS detects naturally occurring microwave thermal emissions from Earth's limb to create vertical profiles of atmospheric gasses, temperature, pressure and cloud ice. MLS looks 90° from the angle of UARS’ [Upper Atmosphere Research Statellite] orbit. Thermal radiation enters the instrument through a three-mirror antenna system. The antenna mechanically scans in the vertical plane through the atmospheric limb every 65. 5 seconds. The scan covers a height range from the surface up to 90 km(55 miles). Upon entering the instrument, the signal from the antenna is separated into three signals for processing by different radiometers. The 63-GHz radiometer measures temperature and pressure. The 183-GHz radiometer measures water vapor and ozone. The 205-GHz radiometer measures ClO, ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitric acid and water vapor. 2, record 77, English, - microwave%20limb%20sounder

... Charnock's formula for the atmospheric side makes physically much more sense than for the ocean side. For the atmosphere, one can imagine a wind blowing over roughness elements somehow related to the wave height. This is not quite correct, because waves are constantly moving and changing their shape, but it yields reasonable results. For the ocean side, however, you have breaking waves injecting turbulence into the ocean. So the length-scale of turbulence near the surface is more likely connected to the turbulence spectrum caused by the breaking events, rather than to the wave height. This implies that Charnock's formula lacks a clear physical interpretation. People use it mainly for the lack of better models. 1, record 87, English, - Charnock%26rsquo%3Bs%20formula

The American Space Agency Nasa... is putting several million dollars into the project under its advanced concepts programme. At the heart of a space elevator would be a cable reaching up as far as 100, 000km from the surface of the Earth. The earthbound end would be tethered to a base station, probably somewhere in the middle of the Pacific ocean. The other end would be attached to an orbiting object in space acting as a counterweight, the momentum of which would keep the cable taut and allow vehicles to climb up and down it. A space elevator would make rockets redundant by granting cheaper access to space. At about a third of the way along the cable-36, 000 km from Earth-objects take a day to complete a full orbit. If the cable's centre of gravity remained at this height, the cable would remain vertical, as satellites placed at this height are geostationary, effectively hovering over the same spot on the ground. To build a space elevator such a geostationary satellite would be placed into orbit carrying the coiled-up cable. One weighted end of the cable would then be dropped back towards Earth, while the other would be unreeled off into space. Mechanical lifters could then climb up the cable from the ground, ferrying up satellites, space probes and eventually tourists. The biggest technical obstacle is finding a material strong but light enough to make the cable; this is where the carbon nanotubes come in. These are microscopically thin tubes of carbon that are as strong as diamonds but flexible enough to turn into fibre. In theory, a nanotube ribbon about one metre wide and as thin as paper could support a space elevator. 2, record 90, English, - space%20elevator

2, record 90, French, - ascenseur%20spatial

The shoeboxsized spectrophotometer-called MAESTRO(Measurements of Aerosol Extinction in the Stratosphere and Troposphere Retrieved by Occultation)-is the most advanced in a long line of MSC instruments that have flown on balloons, high-altitude research aircraft and space shuttle missions over the past 10 years. MAESTRO and other spectrophotometers operate on the principle that different gases absorb different wavelengths of light, ranging from short, ultraviolet(UV) rays to long, near-infrared ones. Each gas, therefore, has its own "fingerprint" or distinct spectrum of absorption. This makes it possible to identify which gases are present from changes in the brightness of sunlight at different wavelengths between light coming directly from the Sun and light that has passed through the atmosphere on the way to the spectrophotometer. Ozone, for example, absorbs UV light and is, therefore, essential to preventing high levels of these rays from reaching the Earth's surface. As the Sun rises and sets, its rays slice through different layers of the atmosphere and out into space. MAESTRO will be equipped with more than 2000 separate detectors record the full spectrum of wavelengths emitted by direct sunlight and by sunlight travelling through these layers. These data will then be analyzed to provide precise measurements of gases and aerosol particles at different heights in the atmosphere. SCISAT-1 will orbit the Earth 15 times a day at a height of 650 kilometres, allowing MAESTRO to take measurements of 30 sunrises and sunsets every 24 hours. 3, record 92, English, - spectrophotometer%20MAESTRO

2, record 96, French, - longueur%20de%20rugosit%C3%A9
Record number: 96, Textual support number: 2 CONT

DIDO Experiment Container is essentially a box with a side length of 150 mm. Design philosophy of DIDO experiment foreseen an "all inside" approach, so(at this moment) the experiment container is a mere box with no windows or openings, or relevant external features. DIDO EC is intended as a structural part for the inside experiment; only mechanical, electrical and data interfaces are required to connect DIDO EC with GLAD facility. The box is assembled as one piece but the topside is removable to have access to DIDO experiment. In this way the topside component works as a cover plate. The EC is made by(TBD) material and to meet safety requirements EC' s corners are slightly rounded, materials must not be flammable and machined with non-toxic surface treatment. Cover plate is connected with the box through screws. The bottom side, instead, compose the "first plate" of DIDO experiment, housing tanks and pumping system. Another plate placed about half height provides a "second plate" for DIDO cell and relative optics, laser unit and CCD camera. 1, record 100, English, - DIDO%20experiment%20container
