HEIGHT TIDE [12 records]

Record 1 2023-05-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cartography
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Marine and River Navigation Aids
CONT

[For] the actual depth of water,... the "observed depth" will be calculated. The calculation is slightly different depending on whether... a charted depth or a drying height [is used]. Combining the height of [the] tide with the charted depth(or drying height) will give [the] "observed depth, "literally the amount of water [expected to find].

Record 2 2015-02-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Oceanography
DEF

Any graphic representation of the rise and fall of the tide.

OBS

Time is generally represented by the abscissa and the height of the tide by ordinates. For normal tides the curve so produced approximates a sine curve.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
  • Océanographie
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Sewers and Drainage
DEF

The flow occurring in a stream during the driest period of the year.

OBS

low water : term used in referring to water levels resulting from tides. This is not a "stream" phenomenon. According to the "Glossary of Coastal Terminology" by the Department of Ecology in the State of Washington, low water is the minimum height reached by each falling tide.

Record 4 2012-04-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Oceanography
DEF

An interval at high or low water when there is no discernible change in the height of the tide.

CONT

... when the ebb transitions to the flood tide or vice versa, the water level only varies up and down a small scale within the period of time, but not appreciably. This is called the stand of tide. The duration of the tidal stand is generally related to the tidal range. When the tidal range is small, the tidal stand lasts longer and vice versa.

OBS

The water level is stationary at high and low water for only an instant, but the change in level near these times is so slow that it is not usually perceptible.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
  • Océanographie
DEF

Subject field(s)

  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Scientific Instruments
DEF

A device for measuring the height of tide. It may be simply a graduated staff in a sheltered location where visual observations can be made at any desired time; or it may consist of an elaborate recording instrument... making a continuous graphic record of tide height against time. Such an instrument is usually actuated by a float in a pipe communicating with the sea through a small hole which filters out shorter waves.

Domaine(s)
  • Appareils de mesure

DEF
