When the "haul in" signal is given on the docking telegraph …, the operator pulls on the slack end of the rope that is wound loosely round the drum of the winch. This tightens the rope slightly on the drum and it grips the surface. The amount of tension on the free end of the rope is multiplied several hundred times and the resulting force is enough to move the entire ship, pulling it into the correct position. The [captain] signals with the docking telegraph or a hand held radio to tell the winch operator what to do and, by heaving in and paying out the ropes at each end of the ship, she can be positioned in exactly the right place regardless of the wind and waves. 1, record 2, English, - docking%20telegraph

Incorporeal hereditaments are intangibles; they are rights which were regarded as real property rather than personalty because of their close affinity with land, being rights over or in respect of land. Incorporeal hereditaments are capable of being held for an estate or interest in the same way that land may be. The main examples... are easements, "profits à prendre" and rent charges. It has been pointed out that the distinction between corporeal and incorporeal hereditaments is meaningless and confusing in that, in law, a property interest is only a right of ownership which, as a right, is incorporeal, never corporeal, although the object of the right may be either corporeal or incorporeal. However, the distinction is one that remains in common usage....(Anger and Honsberger, 2nd ed., 1985, p. 11). 1, record 8, English, - incorporeal%20hereditament

The [Iowa Supreme Court] affirmed the trial court's refusal to render a foreclosure decree ordering a sale of the property involved to repay the mortgage held by the plaintiff and pointed out that the Iowa code expressly required the filing of the instrument, the copying of the instrument into the record book, and the indexing of the instrument. Relying on the purposes for the establishment of a system of recordation, the court interpreted the legislative intent as requiring the indexing of an instrument before there could be valid recordation.(Axelrod, Berger and Johnstone, 1971, pp. 552-553). 1, record 9, English, - indexing

The Statute of "Quia Emptores" abolished rent service arising upon a conveyance in fee simple, by prohibiting subinfeudations. A ground rent in its pure form is a rent reserved to himself and his heirs by the grantor of a freehold estate in land, out of the land itself. It is not granted like an annuity or a rent charge, but is reserved out of a conveyance of the land in fee. It is a separate and distinct estate in itself and is held to be real estate with the usual characteristics of an estate in fee simple. The holder of a ground rent proper has an estate in the land itself, for the ground rent is a rent service and the grantor has a reversion. The right of distress is an incident of ground rent proper.(Cartwright, 1972, p. 805) 1, record 10, English, - ground%20rent

Soil suction is equal to a force per unit area that must be exceeded by an externally applied suction to initiate water flow from the soil. Soil suction is expressed in pounds per square inch. 4, record 15, English, - soil%20suction

Tensiometers measure soil tension. This is also often referred to as soil suction or vacuum. Soil tension is a measure of how tightly water is held in the soil, and is measured in pressure units of centibars(cb) or kilopascals(kPa). These are equivalent units. One hundred centibars equal approximately 15 psi. Soil tension increases as moisture in the soil is depleted. This force also draws water out of the tensiometer through its porous tip, creating a vacuum inside the tensiometer. This negative pressure, or tension, is registered on the tensiometer vacuum gauge. The soil tension measured with tensiometers is an indirect indication of soil moisture content and can be used as an indicator of irrigation need. 3, record 15, English, - soil%20suction

Military judges adjudicate at courts martial and other military proceedings such as the judicial review of persons held in pre-trial custody.... The requirement for military judges to be independent of the military chain of command was set out by the Supreme Court of Canada in 1992 in its decision in R. v. Genereux. The necessary judicial hallmarks of security of tenure, financial and institutional independence for military judges are guaranteed in the National Defence Act. Military judges are appointed by the Governor in Council for a fixed term of five years, which is renewable upon the request of the military judge. Military judges are only removable by the Governor in Council upon the recommendation of an independent Inquiry Committee. 3, record 16, English, - military%20judge

Heightened expectations will be difficult to meet, but they have been sustained by recent accomplishments : in the last few days of 1991, the Secretary General helped work out a negotiated solution to twelve years of insurgency in El Salvador; in earlier weeks, one of his representatives obtained the release of Western hostages held in Lebanon for several years; in January 1992, another UN diplomat secured a fragile ceasefire in the Yugoslav civil war and the UN Security Council held its first ever meeting at the Head of State or Government level; and now the UN is deploying some of the largest peacekeeping contingents ever in Yugoslavia and Cambodia. 1, record 19, English, - peacekeeping%20contingent
