All helicopters incorporate a one-way clutch system that allows the rotor blades to continue to rotate under the effects of inertia and autogiro-type flight in the event of engine failure.... the flow of the airstream through the helicopter rotor disk is reversed. The force of gravity continues the operation of the rotor blade, thereby reducing the rate of descent and allowing a successful emergency landing. Because of the time required to effect this change and the necessity for other flight maneuvers, these characteristics led to the development of a restricted area of operations of the helicopter known as the deadman's curve, bounding that area of height and speed in which the helicopter should not be operated. 1, record 3, English, - deadman%26rsquo%3Bs%20curve

The fenestron, [like] a conventional tail rotor, [features] spinning blades that generate a thrust force to cancel out the tendency of a helicopter fuselage to rotate. However, the fenestron rotor differs from a conventional rotor by adding several more blades.... Compared to conventional tail rotor blades, the fenestron blades are also much smaller and spin at higher speeds. Furthermore, these blades are mounted within a shroud that forms part of the vertical tail fin of the helicopter. This configuration turns the rotor into a ducted fan whose blade tips are protected from the external air. 3, record 4, English, - fantail

2, record 4, French, - fenestron
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 2 CONT
3, record 4, French, - fenestron

The Rotary Rocket Company is developing the Roton which is a fully reusable, single-stage-to-orbit, commercial launch vehicle. It will be piloted by a crew of two and is being designed to carry 7, 000 lbs to low-earth-orbit. The Roton will takeoff vertically like a conventional rocket powered by a new rotary engine burning liquid oxygen and jet fuel. Once its payload is delivered to orbit, the Roton returns to Earth via a nose-mounted rotor which is deployed in space and used during reentry to help stabilize the craft. Once in the atmosphere, the vehicle will glide like an autorotating helicopter and land vertically, assisted by rotor tip thrusters. 7, record 23, English, - Roton

The first helicopter simulators used a rotor map technique which calculated the total thrust vector of the main rotor on the basis of a series of stored steady states... The simulator was therefore quite realistic in steady flight states, but... [not] in transient condition... in order to achieve realism, the main rotor had to be simulated blade by blade throughout every rotation(blade element modelling), so that factors like interference and cross-coupling could be taken into account. 1, record 41, English, - blade%20element%20modelling
