HELIOSPHERE [9 records]

Record 1 2023-03-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • The Stomach
  • Dietetics
DEF

An expandable device introduced in the stomach as a temporary obesity treatment to reduce the stomach’s capacity, thus reducing food intake and body weight.

CONT

The Heliosphere Intragastric Balloon System is a temporary non-surgical obesity treatment that induces short-term weight loss by partially filling the stomach to achieve satiety.... The deflated balloon is inserted into the stomach through the mouth using an endoscope. It is then filled with air to a final volume of 650 mL to 750 mL and released to float freely in the stomach. The balloon is used with a supervised calorie-restricted diet, and must be removed after six months. Another type of intragastric balloon is the BioEnterics Intragastric Balloon System[, ] a silicone balloon filled with saline.

DEF

Subject field(s)
  • The Sun (Astronomy)
CONT

... the heliopause... marks the end of a region created by our Sun that is called the heliosphere. The Sun creates this heliosphere by sending a constant flow of particles and a magnetic field out into space at over 670, 000 miles per hour.

CONT

CONT

Scientists define the beginning of interstellar space as the place where the Sun's constant flow of material and magnetic field stop affecting its surroundings. This place is called the heliopause. It marks the end of a region created by our Sun that is called the heliosphere.

CONT

Vestiges of the interstellar wind flowing into what's called the heliosphere-the vast bubble filled by the Sun's own constant flow of particles, the solar wind – is one of the ways scientists can observe what lies just outside of our own home, in the galactic cloud through which the solar system travels.

CONT

The Sun emits a steady flow of electrically-charged particles called the solar wind. As the solar wind expands supersonically into space, it creates a magnetized bubble around the Sun--the heliosphere. Eventually, the solar wind runs into the electrically-charged particles and magnetic field in the interstellar gas. The solar wind abruptly slows down from supersonic to subsonic speed, creating a termination shock. Before both spacecraft travel beyond the heliopause into interstellar space, they must pass through that shockwave.

Previous studies of the Sun have only been done in the Ecliptic, and are thus a small glimpse of the dynamic solar environment. Although it will get no closer to the Sun than it was the day it was launched, the Ulysses spacecraft will provide a unique opportunity to explore the Heliosphere in total. It carries a 55 kg(121 lbm) instrument payload to collect data on the solar magnetic field, solar radiation such as radio and plasma waves and X-rays, and the solar wind, as well as cosmic radiation and dust entering the solar system. There are nine instruments :... Unified Radio and Plasma Wave Experiment(URAP) to measure high frequency radio waves and lower frequency plasma waves...

CONT

The energy eruptions in the solar atmosphere can lead to the acceleration of local gas particles to extremely high energies and their injection into the interplanetary space. These fast moving streams of particles are recorded by ERNE. At times, when there is no energetic particle production at the Sun, ERNE is observing the continuous flux of energetic particles from Milky Way(galactic cosmic rays), and from the boundary of the heliosphere accelerated by the termination shock(anomalous cosmic rays).
