An encounter with a foreign pathogen or antigen stimulates naive T lymphocyte activation and the generation of immunologic memory. The T cells which are responsible for immunologic memory differ, both phenotypically and functionally, from naive T cells. Of interest is the observation that aging is associated with an enhanced level of memory T cells, suggesting that the qualitative T cell response differs in the elderly. Further, differences in the proportion of memory to naive T cells may be responsible for immune dysfunction and autoimmunity associated with the aging process. In general, the goal of our research is to characterize the differences between antigenically naive(virgin) and memory T helper cells at the developmental, phenotypic, and functional levels 1, record 6, English, - naive%20T%20lymphocyte

A subpopulation of lymphoid stem cells differentiates along T-cell lineage to become pre-T cells. These migrate to the thymus cell, where they become thymocytes then acquire different cell-surface antigen markers and functionally differentiate into subpopulations of T helper(inducer) cells, T suppressor cells, and T cytotoxic(killer) cells. CD4, symbol for a glycoprotein expressed on the surface of most thymocytes and some lymphocytes, including Helper T cells. Human CD4 is the receptor that serves as a docking site for HIV viruses on certain lymphocyte cells. Binding of the viral glycoprotein gp120 to CD4 is the first step in viral entry, leading to the fusion of viral and cell membranes. 1, record 9, English, - CD4%20receptor

1, record 9, French, - r%C3%A9cepteur%20CD4

2, record 9, French, - r%C3%A9cepteur%20CD4
