In the Budget 2000, the Government of Canada is providing $60 million to fund the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences, which will operate as an independent body. This is the largest single investment in university research in these areas in Canadian history. The Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences will do science research in climate change, extreme weather and air quality. It will provide a better understanding of the implications of climate change and air quality for human health and the natural environment. Il will strengthen Canada's scientific capacity by helping to retain the best researchers in these fields and attract bright young scientists.
