Arkenol Acid Hydrolysis Process. Strong acids are used in the pretreatment and hydrolysis of the feed stock, separating cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin components. The acid/sugar solution is separated by a proprietary resin technology, and the acids are recirculated and reconcentrated. Any acids remaining are neutralized to form gypsum. It is generally agreed that "chromophoric groups" on the lignin are principally responsible for color; oxidative mechanisms are believed to convert part of the lignin's phenolic groups to quinone-like substances that are known to absorb light. Heavy metal ions(e. g., iron and copper) are also known to form colored complexes with the phenolic groups. Extractive materials can contribute to the color of mechanical pulps made from resinous woods.

Because of significant advantages, the kraft process has become established as the world's dominant pulping method. Nonetheless, the process also has some severe shortcomings, principally the low yield from wood, the comparatively high residual lignin content of bleachable grades, and the malodors caused by reduced sulfur compounds.... Most of the earlier modifications were aimed at increased retention of carbohydrates by stabilizing the end groups of the cellulose and hemicellulose polymer chains against "peeling reactions". These reactions cause dissolution of the end groups one unit at a time and consume a significant portion of the cooking chemical.

Thermochemical Fractionation and Liquefaction of Biomass... Proposed three stage biomass utilization scheme.... The first stage(I) is a mild treatment for removal of the hemicellulose fraction. Moderate temperature and pressure are utilized in this stage with the hemicellulose removal either acid or base assisted. The simultaneous isolation, decrystallization and partial saccharification(SIDS) of cellulose is the second stage(II) of the proposed sequence. The second stage reactions are performed at higher temperature and pressures with the intent of obtaining a fermentable oil. The third and final stage(III) is designed to convert lignin to a phenolic oil. Critical factors in this stage are proper choice of catalyst and higher temperatures where lignin is more rapidly degraded.
