On les classe en trois catégories selon leurs dimensions: eucolloïdes; mésocolloïdes; hémicolloïdes (molécules plus courtes que les précédentes et plus solubles; les unités les plus courtes de ce groupe se confondent avec les molécules normales et avec les cristalloïdes).
