HEMOGLOBIN ELECTROPHORESIS [3 records]

Record 1 2023-03-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Bioengineering
  • Electrokinetics
DEF

Technique for separating molecules based on their differential mobility in an electric field.

CONT

The principles of electrophoresis ... can be simply stated as the acceleration of charged particles in an electric field; this is opposed by friction due to passage through the surrounding medium such that the particles move at a constant speed proportional to their charge.

OBS

[Electrophoresis] is used routinely to separate the protein fractions of serum, urine, or cerebrospinal fluid; to separate serum lipoproteins; to separate the lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase isoenzymes; and to detect hemoglobin variants. It is also used in conjunction with immunodiffusion to separate proteins and identify them by antigenic differences.

PHR

Agarose gel, gel, paper, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Technique biologique
  • Électrocinétique
DEF

Record 2 2017-12-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Diagnostic Procedures (Medicine)
  • Blood
DEF

A hemoglobin variant that is a tetramer of Y chains, a marker of alpha-thalassemia.

CONT

Although b-thalassemia is indistinguishable from normal electrophoresis done at early infancy, the diagnosis of clinically significant a-thalassemia syndrome is suggested by the presence of greater than 2% of Bart's hemoglobin, which aids in the differential diagnosis of hypochromic microcytic anemia late in infancy.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Méthodes diagnostiques (Médecine)
  • Sang
DEF
