... to commemorate the five activists who lobbied to have women declared "persons" under Canadian law and therefore eligible to serve as Senators. The sculpture--the first on the Hill to honour Canadian women--will depict Nellie McClung, Emily Murphy, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Louise McKinney and Irene Parlby, known popularly as the "Famous Five".

The larger-than-life sculpture by Edmonton artist Barbara Paterson shows the five women celebrating their milestone legal victory in characteristic poses. An empty chair is part of the work -- an interactive feature that invites passers-by to join the group. There [were] two sculptures produced. The first [was] unveiled in Calgary in October 1999, to mark the 70th anniversary of the "persons" declaration. An identical copy [was] unveiled on Parliament Hill in the fall of 2000.

Celebrated decision of the Privy Council of Great Britain that women are persons and are eligible to be summoned to the Senate. Five women from Alberta, Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby and Henrietta Edwards petitioned the Supreme Court of Canada and the Privy Council of Great Britain for a ruling on Section 24 of the British North America Act : The Governor General shall... summon qualified persons to the Senate. The landmark decision-the word persons includes members of the male and female sex-was rendered on 18 october 1929 by Lord Chancellor Sankey. The first woman appointed to the Senate was Cairine Wilson in 1930.

The Governor General’s Persons Award, for work on behalf of Canadian women, is named for the case.
