Celebrated decision of the Privy Council of Great Britain that women are persons and are eligible to be summoned to the Senate. Five women from Alberta, Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby and Henrietta Edwards petitioned the Supreme Court of Canada and the Privy Council of Great Britain for a ruling on Section 24 of the British North America Act : The Governor General shall... summon qualified persons to the Senate. The landmark decision-the word persons includes members of the male and female sex-was rendered on 18 october 1929 by Lord Chancellor Sankey.
