Contact Period in the Champlain Valley(1609-1664 AD)... 1609 the Mahican living in the Hudson Valley came in contact with Dutch explorer Henry Hudson. Shortly thereafter, the Dutch began to trade metal tools to the Mahican in exchange for furs. The Mahican also developed alliances with the French. When the English captured New Amsterdam in 1664, a region which included much of the Mahican's traditional territory, the Mahican were forced to develop alliances with the British. By 1700 the Mahican population had been decreased from an estimated 4, 000 to about 500 through European diseases, famine, wars, and political pressures. Many of the Mahican merged with other groups, including the Dutch, the Western Abenaki, the French, and the Mohawk Iroquois. By 1720 the Mahican no longer existed as an organized native tribe in the Champlain and Hudson Valleys. The influx of Europeans to the Northeast caused great upheaval among the region's Native American populations. Disease, confusing political and economic relations, and continuous warfare split native communities apart and forced them to join outlying groups.... 2, record 25, English, - contact%20period

The Dines Pressure Tube Anemometer is universally recognised as the most reliable and accurate instrument of its kind and has been adopted as standard by the British Meteorological Office and by meteorological stations world-wide. Dines Pressure Tube Anemometer consists essentially of a Head Assembly, a Velocity Recorder and a Direction Recorder, the IM100 records wind speed and wind direction simultaneously on a single chart. An important feature of the Dines, is that it records not only average wind velocity over a given time, but also variations in wind force, with the strength and frequency of gusts, providing valuable data on the internal structure of the wind. 2, record 39, English, - Dines%20anemometer

The suction head is mounted concentrically with the shaft, near the bearing that supports the vane, and develops a suction that is independent of wind direction. The pressure difference between the suction head and the pressure head is proportional to the square root of the wind speed and is measured by a specially designed float manometer with a linear wind scale. 3, record 39, English, - Dines%20anemometer

Like the kings of France, various English monarchs from Henry I or earlier claimed that they could cure the sick... by touching the patient with their hands.... The patient had to bring [a] certificate declaring that he/she had a genuine affliction and that they had not received the king's touch before. A small medallion was given to the patient, and, in the 16th century, an angel coin – known as a touch piece – was given to those who received the King's touch. 2, record 40, English, - King%26rsquo%3Bs%20touch

Calotypes, also called Talbotypes, after William Henry Fox Talbot who first described them in England in January of 1839, are paper positive prints.
