HEPARIN-INDUCED THROMBOCYTOPENIA [3 records]

Record 1 2025-07-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Human Diseases - Various
  • Blood
  • Immunology
CONT

The researchers who studied the German and Austrian patients ... had initially called the syndrome vaccine-induced prothrombotic immune thrombocytopenia; [two teams of researchers] now suggest a slightly simpler name: vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT).

OBS

... the patients had unusual antibodies that trigger clotting reactions, which use up the body's platelets and can block blood vessels, leading to potentially deadly strokes or embolisms. The symptoms resemble a rare reaction to the drug heparin, called heparin-induced thrombocytopenia(HIT), in which the immune system makes antibodies to a complex of heparin and a protein called platelet factor 4(PF4), triggering platelets to form dangerous clots throughout the body.

CONT

Zeneca).

CONT

Ordinarily, heparin prevents clotting and does not affect the platelets, components of the blood that help form blood clots. Triggered by the immune system in response to heparin, HIT causes a low platelet count (thrombocytopenia).

DEF

Reacción adversa protrombótica, mediada por activación de anticuerpos antiplaquetarios (mayoritariamente IgG [inmonoglobulinas G) contra el complejo formado por el factor plaquetario y la heparina, en individuos en tratamiento con este fármaco.

CONT

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia with thrombosis(HITT) is a paradoxical prothrombotic complication of anticoagulant therapy. As many as 3% of patients undergoing cardiac surgery develop clinical HIT [heparin-induced thrombocytopenia] presenting as thrombocytopenia with or without thrombosis within 5–10 days of heparin exposure. Thrombotic complications associated with HIT carry a mortality rate of 5–10%.
