Les hépatiques ou marchantiophytes regroupent de petits végétaux terrestres, qui se présentent sous deux types fondamentaux : soit un axe portant des «feuilles» (hépatiques à feuilles), soit une lame de tissu plus ou moins différenciée (hépatiques à thalle). Chez ces dernières se distinguent des hépatiques à thalle simple, et des hépatiques à thalle complexe qui possèdent des chambres aérifères s’ouvrant par des pores mettant en relation l’intérieur du thalle et le milieu extérieur.
