La structure végétale d'une forêt se concrétise à la fois dans le sens vertical et sur le plan horizontal. La verticale définit plusieurs niveaux qui correspondent à la stratification des organes assimilateurs, et aussi des organes radiculaires si nous envisageons le profil édaphique. On distingue classiquement : une strate arborescente représentée par les couronnes des arbres; une strate arbustive au niveau des arbustes; une strate herbacée : semis d'arbres et plantes herbeuses en général; une strate muscinale qui vit au ras du sol (mousses).
