HERITABILITY [11 records]

Record 1 2024-12-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
CONT

Heritability estimates range from zero to one. A heritability close to zero indicates that almost all of the variability in a trait among people is due to environmental factors, with very little influence from genetic differences. Characteristics such as religion, language spoken, and political preference have a heritability of zero because they are not under genetic control. A heritability close to one indicates that almost all of the variability in a trait comes from genetic differences, with very little contribution from environmental factors.

Key term(s)
  • estimate of heritability

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
  • Plant and Crop Production
DEF

The proportion of the total phenotypic variance that is due to additive genetic variability.

OBS

Heritability is a measure of the amount of genetic variability, excluding that expressed by heterozygotes, and decreases with an increasing environmental component of variance for the character under observation.

OBS

The symbol h2N should read h exponent 2 N.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Génétique
  • Cultures (Agriculture)
CONT

To develop durum wheat cultivars with high yield, high quality and accepted agronomic characteristics. To further study the effects of chromosome 4A, 4B et 6B of Tritium turgidum L. var. diccocoides on durum wheat. To evaluate recurrent selection as a breeding method for durum wheat improvement. To identify new sources of resistance to pre-harvest dormancy and foliar diseases and determine their heritability.

In plant breeding contexts, the word nearly always relates to broad sense heritability of characters among a group of fixed entities such as clones or pure lines and the interest in it lies in comparing characters rather than improving estimates of h2

CONT

A stochastic computer simulation model was used to predict heritability and repeatability of derived reproductive traits in beef cattle as a function of underlying, normally-distributed genetic variation in single-service conception rate. Traits simulated were mating rate, first-service conception rate, overall conception rate, date of first service, number of services during a 63-day breeding season, calving date and postpartum interval.(Medline data base).
