The Lunenburg Academy is the only intact Academy building surviving in Nova Scotia. Construction began on the building in 1894 and was haulted in 1895 when the company contracted to run the construction went bankrupt. Under the direction of Solomon Morash(whose home is another heritage building in Lunenburg), the construction was continued and the building was completed by late 1895. The building has an entirely wood structure and stands three stories tall. From its perch on top of Gallow's Hill the Academy can be seen from miles around and is claimed to be one of the most remarkable heritage buildings in the province. It has been designated as a Municipal, Provincial and Federal Heritage site.

The wider the road the greater the volume of sand which is likely to be sluiced along and into the lakes and streams. Some streams are now ceasing to flow. Elsewhere the lakes are being made shallower as a result of the sediment pouring in from the roads.

The Spry Point Ark was originally constructed, in 1975, as an environmental research facility for the United Nations Habitat for Humanity Forum. At that time it demonstrated to thousands of visitors world-wide, how appropriate technology could be developed for the benefit of human living and commercial activities. Today the Ark prevails as an international icon, symbolizing the environmental spirit that has matured in significant part, due to research that began at this site. As a result of this continued world-wide notoriety, the Ark is currently under consideration for designation as an Official Canadian Heritage site.

A distinctive feature of many homes is the "Lunenburg Bump", a Scottish dormer that extends out from the roof to form an overhead protecting the front door.
