La cure d'hernie ou herniorraphie par laparotomie signifie que le chirurgien fait une incision au niveau de l'abdomen pour replacer l'intestin dans sa position normale. Puis, il referme l'ouverture dans la paroi des muscles de l'abdomen. La faiblesse de la paroi abdominale peut être réparée, à l'aide de points de suture avec l'insertion d'un treillis synthétique qui consolide la réparation. C'est ce que l'on appelle une hernioplastie.
