Grâce à des colorations spéciales, on peut voir en microscopie optique les vésicules de sécrétion (neurosécrétat) à l'intérieur des axones. Parfois ils s'agglomèrent sous forme de masses arrondies, les corps de Herring. En microscopie électronique, ces grains de sécrétion apparaissent comme des vésicules à centre dense.
