HETEROGENEOUS CATALYST [5 records]

Record 1 2017-01-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Exhaust Systems (Motor Vehicles)
DEF

A substance used in small proportion, that augments the rate of a chemical reaction, and in theory remains unchanged chemically at the end of the reaction.

OBS

catalyst: term and definition standardized by ISO.

OBS

Catalysts in living systems are called "enzymes."

OBS

catalyst: term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

PHR

bimetallic cluster, colloidal, complex, heterogeneous acidic, iron, man-made, metallic hydrogenation, organic, positive(metal ion), Raney nickel, solid catalyst

PHR

pore distribution of a catalyst, reactivation of a catalyst

Key term(s)
  • catalyser

French

Domaine(s)
  • Génie chimique
  • Échappement (Véhicules automobiles)
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Engineering
CONT

In oxychlorination, ethylene reacts with dry HCl and either air or pure oxygen in a heterogeneous catalytic reaction to form EDC and water.... While there are many different commercial oxychlorination processes, in each case the reaction is carried out in the vapor phase in either a fixed bed or fluid bed reactor containing a modified Deacon catalyst.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Génie chimique
DEF

CONT

Heterogeneous catalysts, in contrast to homogeneous catalysts, form a separate phase from reactants and products and are usually solids. They have a microporous structure and a very large internal surface area(it may reach 1000 m²/g) but these colloidal catalysts are often inactivated by the presence of small amounts of poisons. Poisons act by combining with an active site in the catalyst surface and rendering it inactive.

CONT

Organometallic complex catalysts tend to be highly active, specific, and selective, and may resist poisoning better than heterogeneous systems. The catalytic center may have two metal sites. Organometallic catalysts have a central transition-metal atom or ion bonded to molecules known as ligands which form a polyhedron around the metal. The nature of the metal and ligands critically influences the electronic structure of the complex. The coordination bonding properties of the metal are a key feature of the catalytic complexes. Important reactions of catalyst complexes are ligand exchange, oxidative addition, and the insertion reaction.
