CONT

The design and application of the point-of-entry devices must consider the tendency for increases in heterotrophic bacteria concentrations in water treated with activated carbon. It may be necessary to use frequent backwashing, post-contact disinfection, and Heterotrophic Plate Count monitoring to ensure that the microbiological safety of the water is not compromised.

Lorsque la désinfection secondaire est requise, l'analyse régulière de l'eau potable du réseau de distribution au moyen d'une numération sur plaque des bactéries hétérotrophes peut donner une idée de la population bactérienne générale.

Subject field(s)
  • Climatology
  • Ecology (General)
CONT

Nanoclimate or epiclimate is the climate ... on the surface of leaves, in the air cavities in litter, along the slopes of an ant hill, or in the fissures in rocks. Nanoclimate extends vertically a few centimeters, or perhaps a decimeter and extends horizontally for centimeters. Studies of nanoclimate are important for ecophysiology and population ecology of very small organisms.

CONT

Many microbial inhabitants(algae, fungi, cyanobacteria, heterotrophic bacteria) of the Ross Desert have been isolated in culture for use in experimental laboratory studies. These cultures are maintained in the Culture Collection of Microorganisms from Extreme Environments. The nanoclimate(the climate in the millimeter range, the environment of microorganisms) was continuously monitored for six years by automated satellite-mediated weather stations.

CONT

Dissolved organic matter(DOM) serves an important function in providing organic substrates for heterotrophic metabolism in fresh water environments. Its composition is highly variable, but in an ecosystem context it is most generally separated into labile and refractory fractions. The former is rapidly taken up by heterotrophic bacteria while the latter is very slowly acted upon. In both cases the DOM is partly assimilated to generate bacterial biomass and partly remineralized and excreted.

  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
DEF

CONT

This paper reports the relationship among pico-, nano-and microplanktonic communities observed in two different shallow marine hydrothermal environments. Seawater samples from five stations in the coastal area of the ’Porto di Levante’(Vulcano Island) and from three stations off the Island of Panarea(Eolian Islands, Italy) were collected in May and July of 1989, respectively. Micro-biological investigations were carried out in order to determine the density of :(i) the total picoplankton(both autotrophic and heterotrophic) ;(ii) the total picophytoplankton(autofluorescent picoplanktonic cells) ;(iii) the larger phytoplankton(>2 [mu] m) ;(iv) the ’metabolically active’ cells of total picoplankton and cyanobacteria;(v) the heterotrophic aerobic bacteria.
