Phenomenon observed when combinations of mutant alleles do not produce the phenotype expected from the phenotypes of the homozygotes. It is in contrast to those situations in which one allele is dominant over the other, so that the phenotype of the heterozygote is very similar or identical to that of the homozygous dominant. Also, it is different from those situations in which the two alleles show an additive effect, and the phenotype of the heterozygote is intermediate between those expected from the homozygotes. 2, record 1, English, - allelic%20interaction

On parle d'interaction génique réciproque. 1, record 1, French, - interaction%20g%C3%A9nique%20r%C3%A9ciproque

This type of translocation occurs between two acrocentric chromosomes with breaks on opposite sides of the centromere in each chromosome and rejoining of the long arms. This usually results in the loss of a minute centric fragment, the formation of a new metacentric chromosome, and a reduction in chromosome number in the balanced heterozygote.(GENCYT p. 237) 1, record 7, English, - Robertsonian%20fusion

(Abnormalities of the autosome - Group D) For instance, the short arms of a D group chromosomes can be deleted or duplicated without any obvious effect. "Robertsonian fusion" can take place between the long arms of two acrocentric chromosomes with loss of one centromere and short arms, resulting in normal and usually fertile heterozygotes who have no obvious loss of fitness and may have some selective advantage. The molecular basis of beta thalassemia in Lebanon has previously been studied in a sample of 25 homozygote individuals. The 25 individuals included in that study had all presented at the American University Hospital and, with the exception of one patient, were all of the Muslim religion. With the advent of PCR, new techniques for mutation screening have emerged, among them the Allele Refractory Mutation System(ARMS) based on allele-specific priming of the amplification reaction. We are currently applying this technique in our laboratory in order to screen a larger number of samples from heterozygote individuals, in an effort to complement the previous findings and study the distribution of mutations among different geographical regions and different religious groups... 3, record 13, English, - amplification%20refractory%20mutation%20system%2DPCR

Reciprocal translocation is a chromosomal aberration in which two nonhomologous chromosomes are broken and repaired so that two monocentric chromosomes, composed of a piece from each of the originals, are formed. Three possible types of gametes can be formed : a normal gamete with the two untranslocated chromosomes, a gamete with both translocated chromosomes(which will produce an offspring who is a translocation heterozygote or balanced carrier like the parent), and a gamete with one untranslocated and one translocated chromosome(which will produce a child with a partial duplication deficiency; one end of the translocated chromosome is duplicated on the untranslocated chromosome, and the material that this end replaces is deleted). 1, record 14, English, - translocated%20chromosome

Les translocations empêchent l'appariement et la ségrégation des chromosomes au cours de la première division méiotique, et il peut en résulter la formation de gamètes non équilibrés, qui provoquent un déséquilibre pour la descendance. Most mutant genes are recessive with respect to wild-type genes. This fact, puzzling to early geneticists, is now partially understood in terms of the gene-enzyme relation. The recessive phenotype often results from the failure of mutant genes to produce any functional protein(enzyme). In heterozygotes, however, there is always present one "good" gene, and correspondingly, a number of good gene products. Control mechanisms cause the wild-type gene in a heterozygote to produce more gene products than does each wild-type gene in a homozygote. 1, record 15, English, - gene%20product
