CONT

A consistent heuristic is a rule of thumb that helps an AI [artificial intelligence] system make decisions by narrowing down the options and choosing the best one. It is based on past experience and knowledge, and it is intended to help the AI system find a solution that is close to the optimal solution.

CONT

In greedy heuristic, feasible solutions are constructed from scratch by selecting appropriate choices in each step. To solve optimization problems, there is a need to add elements in the partial solution that helps to provide the highest gain.

DEF

Any device or procedure used to reduce problem-solving effort.

DEF

A systematic, experimental method of approaching unstructured, symbolic, or unmeasurable problems for which solutions are found by successive identification and evaluation of the progress made toward the final solution. Additional elements of heuristic reasoning include a tradition of independent investigation, heavy reliance on common sense, and the use of intuition.

DEF

DEF

The setting of goals at one level and determining what means are necessary to achieve them, then passing these means down to the next level where they become goals.

CONT

The general heuristic called means-end analysis is related to specific task performing : the problem statement is transformed into a target or goal state that represents the solution to the problem. This state provides a means of identifying a proper solution to the problem. The program then identifies sequentially the operations that reduce the difference between the new present state and the goal state.

OBS

DEF

Writing a program by means of which a given result will be obtained, although the result is incapable of proof.

CONT

Heuristic programming arose from attempts to use a computer to simulate intelligent behavior as represented by the ability to converse, to answer questions, to play games, to compose music, and to do other things.

CONT

We resort to heuristic programming whenever an algorithmic solution is prohibitively expensive or impossible to follow, or is unavailable.

Subject field(s)

CONT

Methods that use vision to locate a workpiece and the sites on it suitable for gripping have been reported by Birk, Kelley, and Wilson. The proposed three approaches, each of which utilizes two distinct phases called the instruction phase and the execution phase.... An approach called "heuristic acquisition" uses rules based on a priori knowledge of the workpiece and its hold sites. Here, the instruction phase consists of testing different heuristics for acquiring a part, such as "look for the hole that is large enough to insert a finger into" or "find a flat surface large enough to accommodate the cup on a SAVG". During execution, the image of the workpiece is examined to satisfy the heuristics for that part, and the robot proceeds. Since a heuristic does not guarantee that there is a solution, safety mechanisms such as contact sensors must be included to protect both the robot and the part from damage.

OBS

Contrast with appearance acquisition.
