Les lactones (ou olides) sont des esters internes (ou intramoléculaires) des hydroxyacides [...]. Les [gamma]- et [delta]-lactones se préparent par hydrolyse ou distillation d'acides [gamma]- ou [delta]-halogénés, ou en traitant des acides non saturés par l'acide bromhydrique, ou encore par réduction partielle d'anhydrides cycliques. Les [bêta]-lactones se forment par réaction du cétène avec des aldéhydes ou des cétones. Enfin, les termes supérieurs sont obtenus par oxydation des cétones cycliques par l'acide de Caro (monopersulfurique); on prépare de cette façon l'[epsilon]-caprolactone à partir de la cyclohexanone.
