Common or bread wheats belong to the hexaploid group. Twenty-eight of the forty-two chromosomes in bread wheat are of the A and B genomes as in tetraploid wheats.

The hexaploid group has only one species name. Different members of this group are identified by subspecies(s. sp.) names. The abbreviation that follows each species(or sub-species) name refers to the scientist who first used the name.
