In traditional karate,... an offensive striking technique using the foot, in which the kicking leg is extended sideways and the heel or the edge of the foot is pushed into the target by a thrusting motion of the hip.

The definition of ’hip’ is "familiar with or informed about the latest ideas, styles, development, etc... ;considered aware of the or attuned to what is expected, especially with a casual or knowing air; cool"(p. 905).
