Hippeastrum. Plante herbacée vivace à très gros bulbe tuniqué, à tige fistuleuse et à feuilles linéaires. Les fleurs, de très grande taille (10-15 cm), aux couleurs brillantes, sont groupées en ombelle; les six pièces du périanthe, en entonnoir, sont soudées à leur base en un tube court. Ces plantes sont connues chez les horticulteurs sous le nom d'amaryllis. (50 espèces vivent en Amérique du Sud. Famille des amaryllidacées).
